I don't know the veracity of these claims, but I do want to say that I don't think Apple should monetize privacy in this way. There are already people, like myself, who flock to Apple precisely because of (although not only because of) the privacy and confidentiality issues so we are already willing to pay to get into the Apple ecosystem. At that point, Apple shouldn't again monetize privacy and confidentiality by offering additional services for that. They should just make it a part of the default of being part of their ecosystem.
Can we lock that up? I get this - but make it so!

lmao they gonna charge for it? I have an iCloud+ sub so doesn't matter to me but they should offer a free version at least.

Copilot is the best "chatbot" out atm. It's basically ChaptGPT but it's integrated so well into Windows and has iOS/Android apps.

If Apple lock their AI stuff behind subs then it's another L for them. Copilot,ChatGPT and gemini offer pro plans but they all have free tiers. Hopefully Apple do the same or they'll never catch up.

If you think Apple cares about your privacy then joke's on you. They don't care. They want you to think they do and they'll charge you for it. Private Relay/Hide My Email should be free but you have to pay.

Mark my words: maybe not right away, but eventually, whatever this is will be used to front “privacy” while increasing services revenue and growing the ad business.
Tim Cook is making such a big deal about AI now I wouldn’t be surprised if some AI subscription features get announced at WWDC. Wall Street won’t care about AI if Apple can’t find a way to make money off of it.

I’m all for it…if it’s optional and unobtrusive.

I don’t need assistance in browsing the web, looking at you Chrome & Edge. I don’t give a **** about AI “features” that don’t actually do anything for me but get in the way with prompts to start using it.

A browsing assistant in Safari could be one of the many new generative AI features that are rumored to be coming to the iPhone with iOS 18 later this year. There are already multiple iPhone web browsers with AI tools, such as Microsoft Edge with a GPT-4-powered Copilot and Arc Search, which can summarize web pages to provide concise information.
It's gotten pretty obvious that Apple is behind on AI, but I don't know how I might feel if, when September comes and iOS 18 gets released, I find out that all the "new" AI features on Safari are just Apple-fied versions of stuff that's already been available for a long time in other browsers. 🙃

It's like when Apple talks about how great Apple Music is as a streaming service, and I just think "didn't Spotify already do all this, but better?"

If the backend is the same it doesn't matter what you use on the front end you're likely going to get then.

I did a search on Google and then used Arcs Browse For Me feature which returned the same sites of which none found what I was looking for.

There are web architectural issues that a Browser simply isn't going to be able to fix with bolting on AI.

It will be interesting to see how much Apple charges for the Emergency SOS via Satellite feature as well.

Who the hell is asking for these generative AI features anyways? ChatGPT and the like are tools that overpromise and underdeliver, and that bubble can’t pop soon enough.
IF they can do it right (and that's a HUGE "IF"), then it would be the first usable selling point for me to buy a new phone. I very often use GPT Plus and Copilot and doing anything with Siri is just a slap in the face even compared to Alexa.
