Can't innovate? This feature is completely revolutionary and unlike any free app you could have downloaded 10 years ago!
Wow, you’ve been able to hand write math notes 10 years ago? Sure fooled me! 😂

Just imagine if a 1/10th of 10 billion Apple lost on car project, was devoted to iPadOS...
Considering the $1 billion/year is only around 3% of the total yearly spend I suspect iPadOS gets at least as much.

Could somebody please explain to me why Apple omitted a calculator from the iPad?

It’s strange to have it for the desktop and also for the phone but not for the iPad. It’s not like this is some incredibly complex application that needs to be written….
So you can’t think of a better calculator?

The reason Federighi gave was because there were tons out there, and there was no point if they were going to just make the iPhone app bigger. Now (using AI) they can make a better one. They have literally found a hole in the calc eco system and filled it.

As far as why didn’t they do one at launch? I’m guessing they never got round to it??

I suspect, based on the use case described by SJ at launch, a calculator made little sense on a large touch device. I've seen some large 4 function calculators and they felt cumbersome compared to a more normal size device. Having it on a Mac made sense due to the keyboard. On the original iPhones, the size was similar to normal calculators; ergo made sense. A standard calculator still makes little sense on an iPad. The addition of hand-write math something new was added.

still don't understand why can they provide the same app (even without tablet UI) on the iPad!!!!

Good to know. Math Notes looks great. Happy to see that calculator is now finally available on iPad.

Have to be honest, this was the single best thing that came out of WWDC..was going to get pencil pro! Was delivered yesterday

Where was this feature back in 2010 when many people, including here on Macrumors.com, needed this the most?

I love the fact they now include conversions into the Calculator app. I'm not interested to bringing up a web site just to do conversions between metric and English measurement units.
You can already use iOS search for such conversions today.

I just tried the iPad calculator - and wound up here trying to figure out how to turn on RPN. I can't believe it's not a setting...
