I hate the new photos app! its almost impossible to find my favorites album where I always used to go...
It’s in Pinned Collections, which is a customisable row where you can add shortcuts to everything you use frequently. It is so much easier to get to everything once you learn how to customise the app.

Customizing the app helps a lot, but there is still things I miss from the old version. Maybe I was the only one using it, but I really liked the view of the curated photos in comparison to the all photos view.
Maybe I am mistaken, but in the new app I can only filter for what to include rather than what to exclude. I’d love to exclude screenshots for example. If this option returns plus a much nicer version of the current month view (which is ugly and space wasting) that provides options for a week and a day view, then I am alright with the update.
After digging some more I did indeed find the option to not show screenshots in the Library view.
Steps:
- pull down on the library until you see the "Years | Months | All" menu pop up
- click the two opposite arrows on the left side
- click View Options
- you might have to scroll down on the options to the subsection "Show"
- remove check mark next to "Screenshots"

I still miss the view with some photos being larger and some videos playing, but this certainly helps.

With all the "great customization" introduced I wonder why I cannot customize the items in the photos sidebar on iPadOS 18. I really would like to get rid of "Wallpaper Suggestions" and the horrendous selection of 'Featured Photos'.

And I have found something akin to the old curated view, but it feels incredibly frustrating:
- it's called "Summary" but so far I have only been able to enable it in "Recently Saved"
- you can specify not to show screenshots, but the settings are lost each time you exit the "recently saved" view!!!!!!

What I am hoping for:
- This Summary view as an option for the library. With settings on what to view saved.

Yep... My updated Photos app that I configured this morning works exactly like the Photos app of old with just a camera-roll photo grid.

Seems many here don't want to take the less than 30 seconds to configure theirs.
Right. Plus, are ya never gonna get a new iPhone? cause that’s gonna come with at least iOS 18. Meanwhile, you’re kinda punishing yourself by missing out on all the great enhancements in iOS 18.

Not only that... Apple's *emergency* update release 18.1.1 was to deal with a major security exploit and threat. That was a recent story here on MR and was also reported on national network news a few nights ago.

People refusing to update to iOS 18.1.1 do so at their peril. People have been warned.

the same holes where patched in 17.7.2

My biggest gripe with redesign is loosing the olds days view. It was so much better and more beautiful to use.

They could easily bring it back by adding to the overlay which has years, months and all photos - just like in iOS 17. They wouldn't need to change anything else

The reasoning is that you're not going "back" to anything, you're simply navigating down to the other collections. The functionality of the main library is exactly as it was prior to iOS18 (with the swiping to change time periods). The X button is right there and near most people's thumbs to show the other sections again. Also, you can tap the time period from anywhere in the library again to get to the bottom, then simply scroll up to see the collections again.
Hmmm, that X button is in a location that is only useful if you hold a phone with two hands. I have pretty big hands for a guy, and my thumb comes nowhere near that top right side of the screen, when holding the phone with one hand.

Swipe all the way to the left. And then try to swipe to the right, you will not be able to.
The tabs should not be changing by swiping. There should not be floating close button, as the whole OS does have an entirely different pattern of navigation.

Good grief, the new Photos is so bad. I always rename my photos: date-occasion-sequence. In the past searching on the occasion would give me all the images. Now nothing. Just nothing.

I HATE this redesigned app. In every way. The scrolling is clumsy with the lower stuff in the way, there's a bar at the bottom that won't go away, the getting to the albums is bad and clumsy, viewing a single image is bad. And now search is screwed up too?

Way to go, Apple.

WHY fix something that isn't broke?

Will "Smart Albums" ever going to be implemented on iOS? It is strange that MacOS offers it, but iOS does not.

That is one of the things I really do not get. Modern iPads and iPhone are fast enough to use smart albums. For me it would even be enough to only being able to create them on the Mac but I would like to see their contents on all devices. As it is now, smart albums are very limited by this.

But I guess Apple is all on the AI train, maybe they will remove albums and smart albums completely in a future version and all collections will be generated by an AI. I guess most people never ever used smart albums.
