One would expect that this new improved functionality replicates across multiple OS's not just the iOS. For example Apple TV Siri offering more knowledge about suggested content or best recommendations based on history. One could also say Music badly needs better navigation as an another example the same goes for the Apple TV app that is very mediocre compared to info on IMDB info."I'm told that the new operating system is seen within the company as one of the biggest iOS updates — if not the biggest — in the company's history," he wrote.
Definitely a huge annoyance as someone who used android for many years where it's not an issue.Doesn’t sound like much of an upgrade to me if those are the headlining features. How about fixing the keyboard first… when I try to edit my comment here and I tap in between words, half the time it inserts the text cursor and the other half it selects an entire word. So frustrating.
iOS 18 Potentially 'Biggest' Software Update in iPhone's History
OMG NO! For the love of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, please tell me you are kidding.AppleGPT or bust.
I just found out that you can hold down the spacebar and it takes away from the entire word selection.Doesn’t sound like much of an upgrade to me if those are the headlining features. I’ll believe when I see it
I need no assistance. It works just as I described. Are you sure you are using apple's calendar app and not a 3rd party one? I've been using it since the original iPhone and I know exactly what it can and can't do. Maybe you are thinking about the list view and not the month view. The list view does show upcoming events but not the whole month at a glance and only when you select a day with events scheduled and only that day. Not exactly information at a glance. It's a poorly designed UI. Good UI's are intuitive and convey relevant information at a glance. This does not do that. Since awful ios7 redesign it has been one of my least used apps because of its poor design.
Apple has been so focused on hardware that they let the software fall behind. They had at least a 5-year start on Siri and squandered that all away. Apple has these tweaked-up processors, but very few apps that use them to the fullest. From the article of Gurman:
- A revamped version of Siri that is more intelligent and able to take advantage of a new AI system that incorporates large language model technology
- AI integration in the Messages app that can “field questions and auto-complete sentences”
- New AI features for Apple Music to create “auto-generated playlists”
- Integrating generative AI into iWork apps, including Keynote and Pages
- Adding generative AI features to Xcode to let developers “write new applications more quickly
They're basically trying to keep up, but I doubt (although as a customer I hope so) Apple's technology put in iOS 18 will be better that what is already available from others since years.
- Basically what Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, or Bixby already do since years.
- Basically what Chat GPT and Google do since 1 year.
- Basically what Spotify does since years.
- Basically what Google G Suite offers since years.
- Basically what GitHub Autopilot Code offers since years.
This is exactly how I described it. It doesn't show all the month's events on one page. It only show grey dots which are useless at conveying any information other than there is an event. The month view should have color coded dots to signify what type of event is scheduled. When you open the month view all the month's events should be listed and scrollable and be color coded as well. The current implementation requires you to select a day with an event to see what it is. So if I have 12 events scheduled that month and I want to see when my doctor appt is, I have to select every single dotted day until I find it. Not handy at all. And If I'm a busy person (the kind of person who would benefit most from a decent calendar app), and schedule things almost every day, the grey dots only help me find what days I'm free, and nothing else.I'm using Apple's Calendar app on my iPhone. And it works as described. In Month view, if there are events on the current date, there's a list of those events that you can scroll through while still seeing the month. You can touch any particular event to see a more complete description of that day's event, or, to change its time, parameters (such as repeat frequency), etc.
Also, you can touch any other day in the month with a gray dot and see a scrollable iist of events occurring on that day.
Note: The above is far different than those claiming there is no "Month View." I suspect some people here will now be moving the goal posts and say, "Yeah, but... it doesn't do this or that, blah blah blah. "

You can never copy/paste where you want to, either. They never should have changed it from the old magnifying glass text edit UI.Doesn’t sound like much of an upgrade to me if those are the headlining features. Do what I’ll be doing, waiting until 18.2 or 18.3 to upgrade from iOS 17.I’m already worried about the bugs.
That’s interesting. It does something similar on a Lemmy app I use. I’m thinking it’s actually a text input API bug. There seems to be a bug with the comment box on MR in general. Sometimes the sentence I just wrote is suddenly gone after I hit post reply (but shows it again when I click edit) or it just shows the same sentence I just wrote again and my actual words are gone. It’s weird
I think a few of those features Jerry mentioned would be easy for Apple to implement. The one in particular that I recall is the OS in Android letting you know if you made an obvious mistake like setting the alarm incorrectly and asking you about it.For me, Apple has not released any headlining feature or QOL (Quality of Life) features since last 3-4 years. All I got was some dumb Share Play and dumb collaboration updates which I don’t even remember…. forget about using.
Selecting and editing text has got to be the worst experience ever on today’s smartphone.
If you see Jerryrigeveryting’s youtube video on why he switched back to Android after using an iPhone for 1 month, it’s abundantly clear that Apple these days doesn’t really care about us or takes us for granted.
Even MKBHD has given enough sugarcoated criticisms about iOS since last 3 years which smug management at Apple continues to ignore.
My biggest gripe is that I am unable to use my iPhone 512Gb as a storage device by plugging it to PC/Mac and transferring files to it directly. I have to jump through hoops, use iTunes to transfer files to an App’s folder then use iTunes to copy it back.
Well, you only think the goalpost moved because you made an incorrect assumption on its whereabouts. Also, if you have a lot of things scheduled for one day, then yeah, but if you only have one or two things on a few days per week then it's not useful. Also, you would still be able to scroll through your day with the entire rest of the month following it on the same screen.I'd much rather see, and be able to scroll though, the events occurring on the date I'm looking at the calendar. That's most important to me.
This whole discussion started off with someone claiming there was no Month view. Thus the goal posts moving.

Nope, I want apple to fix this one. That would make me happy. That's why I commented on it. If I wanted a 3rd party calendar app, I would have one and not complain that the one I do use needs improvement. Like a month view instead of just a useless calendar with dots.Nope, nice try. Someone claimed that iOS Calendar didn't have a Months view. Which is not true. It has one and it works very well.
Again... I'm much more interested in being aware of and seeing all events I might have scheduled for the day that I'm looking at in the Calendar app.
Your needs are different. And that's ok. Simply choose a different Calendar app that meets your needs and find happiness.

Apple has big plans for iOS 18, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

In the subscriber-only Q&A section of his Power On newsletter today, Gurman said iOS 18 has the potential to be the "biggest" software update in the iPhone's history.
"I'm told that the new operating system is seen within the company as one of the biggest iOS updates — if not the biggest — in the company's history," he wrote.
Gurman said he plans to share more details about specific iOS 18 features and changes that are planned in the future, but we already know about two new features that are likely to be included in the update, as outlined below.
iOS 18 will be released in September, and the first beta for developers will come out during Apple's annual developers conference WWDC in June.
RCS Support
![]()
In November 2023, Apple announced that it would support the cross-platform messaging standard RCS in the Messages app on the iPhone starting "later" in 2024, so it will likely be an iOS 18 feature based on that timeframe.
RCS support should result in the following improvements to the default messaging experience between iPhones and Android devices:These modern features are already available for iPhone-to-iPhone conversations with blue bubbles, via iMessage, and many of the features are also available in third-party messaging apps, such as WhatsApp and Telegram. RCS support on the iPhone will extend the features to green bubbles in the Messages app.
- Higher-resolution photos and videos
- Audio messages
- Typing indicators
- Read receipts
- Wi-Fi messaging between iPhones and Android devices
- Improved group chats, including the ability for iPhone users to leave a conversation that includes Android users
- Improved encryption compared to SMS
Smarter Siri
![]()
Gurman expects iOS 18 to feature generative AI technology that "should improve how both Siri and the Messages app can field questions and auto-complete sentences." He said Apple has also explored generative AI features for other apps across its platforms, including Apple Music, Pages, Keynote, and Xcode.
The Information reported that Apple plans to incorporate large language models into Siri to let users automate complex tasks, a feature that would involve deeper integration with the Shortcuts app. The report said this feature is expected to be released in an iPhone software update coming in 2024, which would likely be iOS 18.
Generative AI surged in popularity in 2022 when OpenAI released ChatGPT, a chatbot that can respond to questions and other prompts. Google and Microsoft released similar chatbots last year, as more companies race into the space. The chatbots are trained on large language models, allowing them to respond like a human.

Agreed. Little things like that are what makes Android appealing to me.I keep forgetting that it's still not supported to to arrange the home screen. It's such a basic feature - the first & most accessible screen that the user opens should contain what the user finds most useful.
It's wild how the iPhone is the user's deeply-personal constant companion, but Apple doesn't want to give these personalization options.
