Does it mean for international messages too. I have WhatsApp as some international buddies dislike SMS, apparently they have to pay to receive and send. If I can get rid of WhatsApp then it will be great. Just one less app.

Yup, it's like iMessage in that respect. It will still fall back to SMS if it can't send though, so it's worth making sure it's actually sending an RCS message. Unless there's some setting to not fall back to SMS (unlikely) you might not be free from Whatsapp just yet.

Yep, I'm sending PDF documents from my files app on my iPhone and iPad. I create about 3 PDF inspection reports daily and send them to clients. When they are android users I have to create a dropbox link.

Not sure how it came through before but I just sent a test PDF file as a text to my Pixel 8 Pro and it came through as an attachment and I was able to open it in Adobe Acrobat without any issues.

I’m running beta 2. When I text one phone number of an Android user, it sends as RSC and shows status (delivered/read). But, if I do a group text of iMessage and Andriod numbers, it sends as SMS.

Checked, and of the 6-7 co-workers of mine who have Androids, only two have RCS come up.

Not going to intentionally send a text to an Android person to see if it changes once a conversation has started up, but will be interesting to find out if it does.

Bit the bullet and texted a cousin of mine. In between messages from me, it switched back to MMS. I had to force close the app as it switched back to SMS like mentioned above, and it worked again. Still a few kinks to work out, but definitely a highlight of iOS 18.

It’s funny I wonder if Apple users are actually more excited for RCS than Android users… Android users tend to seek the cheapest possible phones (either they’re unenthusiastic about tech or can’t afford Apple products), cheapest aka MVNO carriers (most don’t use RCS?), and their phones never update due to fragmentation, etc, AND, Google seems to not even set RCS on by default all of this adds up to what I presume is very low participation in it. Perhaps Apple users care more that their videos aren’t degraded to crap via MMS than Android users, that their messages are encrypted, etc and all this RCS hype from Google has been mere marketing BS?! I think we’re setup to be disappointed that RCS would actually solve SMS!

As far as I know it doesn't work with group texting, only one to one.

Check text messages between the individual Android users. It may be that RCS doesn't show up on one or more of them, hence why it sends it as SMS.

Just confirming not showing up in AU as yet.
Hopefully we get a chance to test it out soon.

You forgot the 3rd possibility, not everyone loves Apple or iOS. I've daily driven iPhones before and I don't like/enjoy using iOS nor do I like Apple's business practices.

That doesn't mean I wholeheartedly endorse Google's business practices either but Android is my lesser of two evils choice mainly because of the freedom it allows me within Android. I'm in IT but before I had an interest in IT, I was always interested in tech and I can still be interested in Apple and acknowledge when they do something I like without making them my personal computing choice.

I thought for sure Apple would use a different color.
Apple should change the color of Android RCS chats to something more pleasing to look at. Change them to gray and dark gray even... It'll still look better than the ugly green color.

Purple would be a nice color. Perhaps Red even.

RCS test with a buddy. Sent a photo and it’s pristine… he can see Tapbacks, I can see his read receipt. He sent me video and photo..: still a little murky. Maybe not fully working yet?

I guarantee you that for whatever color you like, a million people will dislike that and want something else (maybe green).

Since RCS is managed by carriers, I doubt there’s any guarantee of maintaining any particular photo quality. It’ll probably be different depending on which carriers are involved (both yours and the recipient’s).

International users will probably still prefer WhatsApp. I don’t think there’s any guarantee that RCS is free on any given carrier or country. Combine that with the uncertain device/carrier support, and people are going to stick with something more consistent (WhatsApp)

The burning question is...

Will RCS messages have blue bubbles or green?
iMessage has a bunch more features than RCS. Apple wants you to know you’re using iMessage, hence the difference.

I’m curious why they didn’t add another color to the mix to indicate RCS visually, instead of via text.
