This would be a welcome change. The only foreseen issue will be with people who aren't tech savvy & screw up the layout of their Control Center. Like in macOS with the "Customizable Toolbar" section, there will probably be a way to revert to a default Control Center.
Agreed. I’m all for customizability but it definitely introduces another layer of complexity, and my parents will find a way to mess it up lol

Apple does a great job of walking that line though, unlike Android & Windows

So the difference is that it is drag and drop rather than being customized in settings?
We have idea what the difference will be since of course all rumors at this point. But currently one is very limited in settings to just allow which items appear in the bottom rows. A customizeable layout would imply the ability to change persumably all the elements positioning of what shows and maybe blank spaces like on the rumored new home screen and how Android has allowed for a while. But again anyone's guess.

Meh. Control Center is already customizable as you can select some of what appears and does not appear. Most of these are system settings that belong in familiar, recognizable, and user-proof locations. Letting users switch the positions of brightness and volume sliders does nothing of net benefit to anyone. At most I would like to designate some specific Home controls to remain static, but honestly over time the ML for the dynamic aspect of these controls has gotten so good that 99% of the time the control I want is already there.

100% this post in every single imaginable away.
For the same reason users can't rearrange the buttons inside applications, rearranging control center sounds like a support nightmare.

Apple has tested a redesigned version of Control Center with a customizable layout for iOS 18, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter. However, we have not confirmed if this change has been finalized for the update.

The new Control Center would feature a drag-and-drop system that allows at least some of the controls to be reorganized directly on the interface, our sources said. Currently, only the smaller controls in the bottom half of Control Center for things like the flashlight and Low Power Mode can be rearranged or removed through the Settings app.

If this plan moves forward, it would represent the biggest redesign to Control Center since iOS 11 was released in 2017. On the iPhone X and newer, the menu can be opened by swiping down from the top-right corner of the screen, providing controls for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, display brightness, volume, and many other system functions.

We'll find out if the redesigned Control Center is happening in just days from now, as Apple is set to unveil iOS 18 during its WWDC keynote on June 10. The first beta of iOS 18 will likely be made available to members of the Apple Developer Program immediately following the keynote, and the update should be widely released in September.

The control center should be on the widget page and those controls should be stand-alone widgets. You could add weather, next to screen brightness toggle, music widget - this would make more sense especially since all these controls have the same design as iOS widgets. Get rid of the up to down swipe to open the control center, and place everything where the widgets are (on the most left screen).

and wow movable controls but bet the following wont happen.

Be able to ask siri your heart rate or how far you have ran with an apple watch on.

Adjust all volume levels at once, or even hear notifications while playing music.

Have the os not interrupt high priority actions with low power or update requests.

Contextually understand text message or other typing inclusive of tense even with AI enabled.

Auto correct safari text input, for example eliminate errant periods in obvious search requests.

Settings that allow select all and apply or multi select and apply.

Learn home routines and ask to auto apply.

Global copy and paste permissions / privacy application at global level.

Waive ring volume limit, allow beyond trying to protect me.

Group notifications by my preferences, global clear.

Full control of which apps are marked to save storage when not used.

Set my favorites in text messages, not stupid siri suggestions.

Infinite zoom into images instead of arbitrary limit.

Select whatever I want posters and people icons instead of whatever dumb ass crop / set limitation that is now imposed.

Rotation lock anticipation.

Scrollable favorites bar on “desktop”

Larger and enhanced text letter pop up when typing.

Movable camera button on UI.

Set default crop mode in camera when taking pic from phone lock.

Enlarged cursor placement via press and hold on spacebar.

Jump to beginning of paste.

Stop auto capitalizing during speech to text.

But AI lol…

Does it even make sense to write an article about this? This could be in any .x update...

I imagine they might take some inspiration from the widgets and give it a dose of colour as well.

If they really wanted to change things up they should add it to the app card screen as a LH-swipe so you can access it with a thumb. Being at the top of the display is unergonomic and an accessibility nightmare, especially on the bigger phones. On the lock screen it would replace the camera swipe; there’s already a button for that

Kinda like this.
It’s already available as a mid-screen swipe through the reachability gesture on the Home Bar, then a downward swipe on the “top” of the screen.

Your mockup would be amazing though.

I always saw reachability as something of a fudge, one of those stop-gap measures put into iOS that they never got around to actually redeveloping properly.
