If my memory serves me correctly, the past couple "beta 1" releases have actually worked quite well! It's the beta 2 and 3 releases that tend to get wonky... Then things tend to get sorted by beta 4 or so.

Beta 1 of iOS 18 was kind of a mess. Nothing with the homescreen icon placements or dark icons worked quite right for a few betas. And of course, almost all the other features were missing. It was stable, though.

It's been a few years since a beta 1 caused my banking apps to stop working or required me to restore my phone. That's an improvement, for sure.

I would prefer the release year muuuuch more.
But 25 or 26 will be a bit strage in the beginning.

WWDC will be really interesting.
Let's imagine Apple made this change last year. You'd rather be on version 24 now, up until September or October? ...and then be on version 25 for two or three months of 2025 (and most of 2026)?

I get where people are coming from with this; but to me, being on last year's number for most of the year seems strange. If the OSes were released before June, then yes...I'd say it should be release year.

At this point I think we are locked in to a 18.6 beta 1 either during or after WWDC. Releases for 17 and 18 have followed a similar trend. I could see 18.5.1 before WWDC but even feeling like that is a stretch. With all the supposed changes for iOS 19, 26, whatever they are calling it, I think it is all hands on deck to have WWDC have a wow factor they can deliver on. They have some damage control to do at WWDC around non delivered items from iOS 18.

Yea beta 1 is always good and stable then betas 2-4 are usually a dumpster fire. And that’s when people downgrade back to the previous iOS version.

Happy to be wrong, but I don't think we see 18.6 till late next week or even the week after. At best I am guessing 18.5.1. this week, but again that feels like a stretch.
Yeah, I agree, I don’t think we’ll see any 18 updates before WWDC25. I could be wrong, but I think we’re likely looking at 18 betas after WWDC25.
