People will make this about planned obsolescence but really AI is computationally expensive

It’s also overhyped and you don’t need it but hey, maybe Apple will be the one company who manages to make something worthwhile

Not being sarcastic or anything, I personally used ChatGPT like twice and the novelty wore off but I’m open minded about this stuff

Also I totally recognize I just might not be the target audience, I don’t really write for a living which seems to be the field where AI works “best”

For now at least

Will they in the future? Maybe; but only time will tell if they want to develop a nano AI model like others have already

Why would Apple do that? iPhone 16 base comes with 8GB. And Apple isn’t in the habit of offering new features to old devices. Heck, they don’t even offer 80% charging limit to older devices even though it’s proven older devices can.

On the other hand, Google delivers more AI features to older devices.

AI is not going to drag me away from waiting for the rumoured iPhone 17 slim ultra. My iPhone 12 Pro Max is still great for now.

Let’s see what the current HomePods are able to do…
LMAO my thoughts since day one always under powering the smart speaker so it can’t keep up with their own tech. Not gonna lie I still have the OG but getting them to sync with the minis is always a hilarious nightmare.

Only some on device AI features won’t be supported on older devices (can we call the 15/15 Plus old) lol. Other devices will likely get some features but through cloud based Apple servers? Let’s see what gets announced next week.

Anyone else worried that battery life is going to get nuked by iOS 18 and on device AI? 😂

I have an iPhone 15 Plus… which means I won’t have to deal with as much of this AI B.S. as someone with an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max. That’s a win for me in my book. Chances are any remaining part of the AI experience on my phone, M2 iPad or M2 Max Mac Studio will end up turned off.

Cool, I’ll upgrade to a phone other than apple for the second year in a row. Tired of this. So bloody tired of this.

Me too. I'm tired of new IOS versions every year. I'm tired of tech companies constantly pushing updates on janky software. Do we need to constantly push code? I'm tired of cloud, AI, Blockchain, disruption and everything being "green". Technology was supposed to improve our lives not control it. Companies shouldn't be so damn anti-consumer.

JP Morgan put out a research note that they expect a “large swathe of users” to upgrade to iPhone 16 because of AI. There’s really only two things Apple can do to satisfy Wall Street here - either make certain AI features exclusive to new hardware (in the hopes of forcing upgrades) or put them behind a subscription. NVIDIA is coming close to overtaking Apple in market cap. I think it’s a ridiculous bubble but it’s what Wall Street is obsessed with right now.

Apple is planning a major AI overhaul in iOS 18, but some new features are unlikely to work on older iPhones, even if they do appear on the new operating system's device compatibility list.
That sounds like a good thing to me. Less AI features to turn off on my non-compatible iPhone 🤣

This is different.
...
Or buy any Android phone with Gemini but your requests will all go online and you will be the product.
With current iPhones, you are already a product, Apple's "valuable customer base", something that lets apple charge app developers "30%".

How are customers really going to respond when Apple finally admit Siri is not fit for purpose, and they made a fix, only… no sorry, not for any of you poors, you can have that dodgy old Siri that doesn’t work. Do they think they will all just go buy the new phone? I mean, sure, maybe some will. Many will just use GPT or copilot and overall tarnish the Apple brand. But I guess the sales bump might be worth the hit to the brand.

So...everything but new iPhone 16s. How are they going to announce AI features WWDC, and then say it won't be available on any current device? Developers wouldn't even be able to develop against any of the new features.
Good question. Are they really going to unveil things that only run on new hardware that won’t be announced until the fall? Or will all the AI stuff be separated from the OS announcements and they’re cagey about what hardware will get it?

Apple- We care about the environment so we will quit including a charger and leather cases.
Also Apple- "but your 2-year-old iPhone that is plenty capable of handling AI with the chip won't get all of the features, go out and buy a new iPhone because who cares about the environment...."
