Some of the map data is terrible. There's a couple of roads near me that are completely wrong (in London, UK) and have been there at least 50-70 years. Not sure where the data comes from but it's not on OSM or Google Maps which are both correct.

YMMV. Take more than one map everywhere.
That's so funny because there's a spot near my house in Bergen, Norway, where Apple Maps are fully aware that the main road goes in a tunnel under the main Hospital in Bergen, but still prefers to send us on a 2-3 km (±2 miles) de-tour to avoid the tunnel when driving. Other than that is seems on par with Google Maps in my neighbourhood.

About the value of bringing more than one map:

We only used Apple Maps for navigation on our last holiday abroad, with a rental car from Gatwick, south of London, out to Cornwall, and back via the Cotswolds to Gatwick. Apple Maps was flawless (as far as I can tell) the whole trip, except the final mile: When we stopped to top up the gas before returning the car, Apple Maps freaked out, recalculated and sendt us to the wrong section of Gatwick. So we had to use Google Maps for the last mile, quite literally, after driving 1000 miles.

Much like:

Just in the last two years:

- asked it for a gas stop before dropping off a rental. When resumed the trip, it routed me to a service drive at the wrong end of the airport. Took me an extra 25 minutes to get through the traffic. Barely made my flight.

I have a huge number of saved places in Google Maps in several lists, particularly restaurants all over the world. Even in areas where Apple Maps is better (and there are more and more), it is my saved Google Maps places that keeps me coming back to Google. I would even pay money for an app that would copy Google place lists to Apple Map, or better still, sync them!
I've started doing this, in planning for our next trips, planned and potential, but I really don't like how Google makes and manages the lists, I think that's just too cumbersome, and I might give Apple Maps a go.

That said: Google Maps seems more reliable and has more places than Trip Advisor, so I might still use Google for our next (couple of planned) trips, especially one to an area of Germany we've never been before.

For the next trip(s) to Japan, though, it might be a tossup between Apple and Google, where I move stuff over from Trip Advisor, and add those things that I've just not found there.

So I take if you are not using a cell phone then ?

Apple Maps is OK for getting to familiar places. However it left me stranded far too many times.

- Went to a first meeting with a customer. AM gets me to the opposite side of a major freeway - I could see their office across the road, but had to drive a few miles and turn around to get there.

- Another customer moved their operations to a new building in 2021. Apple Maps still shows old location. They submitted error reports to Apple. I submitted error reports to Apple. Still showing old address as of last year.

- Just this past Sunday - driving back from a getaway weekend upstate, wanted to stop for lunch at a restaurant that we’ve been to a dozen times before. AM could not recognize the name or could not find it several times in a row. Finally I gave up and asked Google Maps, found it right away.

When it does work it’s great and super convenient. And I like the design more. But when I need to go to an unfamiliar location and it’s important to get there on time, I use Google Maps.
My exact experiences as well. Apple Maps can get it very wrong. Especially Businesses and POI.

Can somebody please explain to me how to manually choose two different points from the map? Both start and end?

I need to check for example how long is it going to take me to walk from one point to another - how to do this? I couldn't find a way.
And if it is so, then this must be the dumbest map app ever.

Thanks for any help.

I like the new features, but I still can’t figure out how to get Siri to take me to one of my saved locations. For example, I have a saved location (now appearing under Pins) for picking up my kids at school, which takes me to the location I meet them and auto-shares my ETA with them. To use it, however, I have to manually tap it in Maps, when I’d really prefer to just say, “Hey siri, take me to School Pickup” or similar. However, I’ve yet to figure out the right siri command to do that.

I just remembered: I need to see if I can save precise locations now. In iOS 17, Maps would change it to the nearest address, when I really wanted the exact spot I was putting the pin. Will give it a shot soon.

I could be wrong (or they’ve changed sources) but I believe Apple Maps primarily uses TomTom map data. Either way, I’m a delivery driver in a rural town in North Georgia and Apple Maps is actually more accurate to the exact address than Google Maps. Plus, I prefer the seamless integration and I do prefer the appearance of Apple Maps. I do love Google Maps though but I have a problem where I often lose the ability to control the app in CarPlay using my car’s control knobs (it’s not a touch screen). I have to force quit it a lot. Apple Maps doesn’t have this issue.
