This article is a bit incorrect. iOS 18.1 is NOT available currently. For context I have a full paid developer account, iPhone 15PM, in the good ole USA and I was a week late on trying to download 18.1 and sorry everyone but, it's not there. It's not on the developer website to download a profile (18.1 specifically) and it does not show up in my settings->software update. 18.1 is gone, perhaps apple pulled it but I really wish everyone would stop talking about something that no longer exists lol.

MacOS 15.1 worked fine for me downloaded it, opt'ed in to AI and love the features. But I can't get any of this on my iPhone because it is NOT available.

That’s interesting. When I clicked on iOS 18 betas in Software Update, I didn’t see it…but then I noticed iOS 18.1 listed on the bottom left of the window and I clicked and downloaded it. Since I already have it installed, I can’t check to see if it’s there, but I just wanted to mention that because of its placement, I almost overlooked it. I’d be interested if it’s still available, because I haven’t seen any other post saying it’s not there, but it’s possible that Apple has pulled it. I also have a paid developer account.

You are never guaranteed to get new features on old hardware.

I hope improved Siri doesn't count as a new feature. It's still not entirely clear what the differences will be between "Siri" and "Apple Intelligence."

If I can just have Siri use the information from Maps and Contacts and Calendar and Phone and Messages and Reminders and all the other apps that have information right there on the phone, that's all I want. They could do that with the new intents system. They already have good on-device voice processing.

I'm fine with not getting the generative AI stuff. There are already plenty of other ways I can get that.

Only Apple can fix Siri, and fixing Siri is a long overdue promise they've made several times now.

I really want to be excited for Apple Intelligence, but between it being available only for the latest phones, and Apple being behind on AI compared to a lot of other companies, I get the feeling it'll be a while before it's something most people can really enjoy. 😩

Agreed. IMHO if there is a big sales bump due to Apple Intelligence you’re probably more likely to see it reflected in iPhone 17 sales numbers than in iPhone 16 sales numbers.

By the time they get everything they are planning for iOS 18 out there and remove the Beta label from all of the Apple Intelligence features that’ll continue to have it for a while it sounds like it’ll be close to spring of 2025. At that point why go get a 16 when the 17 will be debuting in September along with price cuts on the 16 and 15 Pro and Max models?

I have a 15 Pro which I bought last September so it’ll be interesting to watch things progress but I certainly haven’t seen anything that would entice me to upgrade a perfectly good iPhone to a 15 Pro / Max or to the 16 just for Apple Intelligence. Not yet anyway. I hope I’m wrong as that’ll mean they are further along than it appears they are but I’m thinking it’ll take Apple another year to fully catch up with the competition and/or potentially take the lead with Apple Intelligence.

Not installing any betas but waiting to try out Apple Intelligence later this year

I see ZERO reason to install iOS18 ever
As they decided to make me buy a new phone to use the AI features, and that is what I really wanted, why would I install this on my 13 pro max.
Nonsense.
Eventually I will upgrade my phone, but this was a garbage way to force upgrades on people in a crap economy.
Enough with this “crap economy” stuff. Maybe your situation sucks but the economy is fine. Inflation is back down to near Fed targets, GDP is stronger than other developed countries, unemployment is at 50 year lows, and wages have been rising steadily above inflation (but not so fast that it creates its own issues). You would really hate just about any other period in the last 50 years if you think this is bad.

And you’re complaining that they couldn’t wedge an AI model into the memory on your phone which will be 3 models old when AI goes GA? It would have been nice and I could commiserate with you if you had an iPhone 15, but no one promised that you would get every future feature in iOS.

iOS 18 public beta has been pretty smooth on my iPhone 11.

I wonder if iOS 18 will be the last for the 11 or will it squeak out one more major update. 🤔

I can see Apple dropping XR and 11's at the same time due to half the neural cores as the 12 and up.

Looking forward to trying out all the Apple Intelligence features in the coming months.

Actions speak louder than words.

OK... what Apple actions support the claim that Apple believes "a decent amount of RAM isn’t necessary for anyone" ?

Based on Apple selling 600,000+ iPhones everyday of the year (on the average), year after year after year, there's a huge number of people who appear to be getting along just fine with the amount of RAM Apple puts in iPhones.

I've never felt that the amount of RAM in my iPhones was not adequate. Nor have I heard that from anyone else. That certain qualifies as "anyone."

Perhaps it's not enough RAM for people who are mining bitcoin, decrypting adversary encrypted military communications, or gunning for a Nobel Prize trying to find the next prime number... using iPhones.

I've seen ppl complain about apps refreshing after using a memory intensive app like the camera *1 I don't think the camera app counts as an extreme operation like calculating prime numbers or mining Bitcoin.

I'm a photographer and have transitioned to shooting pretty much only with iPhones for the last 7 years (from dSLRs and mirrorless cams).

I've made many thousands of photographs (a bunch posted here on MR) with my iPhones starting with the 6+ up to now shooting with a 15PM. Both in jpeg when that was the only option and then RAW when that became available.

I've NEVER had any refreshing delays during that period of time using Apple's camera on any iPhone. None.

I'm taking about multitasking. When using an app then switching to a memory intensive app like the camera and then switching back to the first app, it will have refreshed. (Cause there wasn't enough ram). I linked to someone complaining about this.

I multitask using my iPhone's camera and other apps open and have never noticed any degradation.
