If they do support the XS and XR phones, I mean that's just phenomenal! What a run!

(still miss my XS)

I believe they will because the redesign despite that meant to happen in iOS/iPadOS 18 didn’t happen because of the 7th Gen iPad having to be supported because base iPads have a maximum of 5 OS Upgrades from the base OS to the maximum OS Apple puts in for them and that has the A10 Bionic and Apple will definitely won’t give it that redesign for sure

And for the 8th Gen iPad it will get iPadOS 19 but it will be the last iPhone/iPad of its kind to be supported by this coming software and have 32GB of storage.

And all other A12/A12X iPad Pro/A13/A14 (non pro A14) and A15 (Mini 6/SE3) have 64GB storage as a start so if 8th Gen iPad gets iPadOS 19 with 32GB of storage you best bet that XR/XS will as well.

so minimum A12 for iOS/iPadOS 19. When XR/XS Gets it they’re level of software support will not only beat 6S/SE but will match the Air 2/Pro models (7 years OS support)

Also with A12 being the minimum Apple won’t want a repeat of iOS 7’s launch regarding the iPhone 4 and iPad 3 ( yes 3 not 2 because of control centre issue for the 3 lol)

And app support too. Apple has lumped those devices from iOS 15-18 regarding app support ( iPadOS17-18 for 7th Gen iPad are together for some apps notably Netflix) and Apple is releasing security patches for iPadOS 17 onwards.

oh goodness no! If it's easier to share a device, customers might not buy as many iDevices.

Sorry I should have clarified: I meant *multiple personal spaces*, for a single user. Sometimes the feature is wrongly called "multiple users" but that is a misnomer. The function is meant for one person to have multiple separate spaces for improved privacy / security.

Plus, if they want, apple can limit the feature to 512gb devices so it's an upsell - apple gets more profit, users get better privacy.

How about addressing the iPhone's longstanding and truly pathetic and embarrassing functionality defect? Yep, it's its inexplicable lack of audible NOTIFICATIONS OF MISSED CALLS.

My Xiaomi phone from 2018 already offers two spaces. And even in a single space it allows you to install most apps twice. So you can have one private WhatsApp and one for work.

Other than the visual changes, expecting everything else to be launched in a staggered manner over 6 or more months after day 1 of iOS 19 public release.

Apple should be postponing any future releases until they fix the travesty that is iOS 18
It's embarrassing or should be for Apple
A £1000 phone that runs no better than a Temu special (slight exaggeration) but it truly is awful and I'm offended Apple can release this garbage and keep a straight face

Or just pull out of the eu market it’s not that big of there market share other phone companies are bigger
EU is 20-30% of Apple revenue, second biggest market and economy in the world <in terms of PPP or GDP behind CN or US depending on metrics> + Apple already comply with all the China stuff which need a lot more changes than making few API's public. <and Apple is losing in CN revenues are dropping yearly>

Honestly, I don’t think iOS 19 is the best iteration to implement an UI redesign… I’d wait to iOS 20, not only because of the number marking a big shift, but especially because there are delayed important features from iOS 18 and a ton of bugs that need to be addressed. If I was the head software development (which I’m not), for iOS 19 I would prioritize stability + bug fix + New Siri and better Apple Intelligence. And when all of that is sorted out, introduce the radical UI redesign on top of a solid operating system.

But, of course, how would they advertise iOS 19 in June? “Hey, remember all those features we announced a year ago for iOS 18? Well, here you have some of them”. So, yeah, maybe they will use the redesign to mask the implementation of this iOS 18 features on iOS 19.

I will probably update to the most stable version of iOS 18 in summer and stay there for a while… because iOS 19 looks like a crammed mess…

I think that Gurman actually said that's the internal reason why they are doing the GUI shift now. You are right, it sounds like it's gonna be a messy iOS release.

Time to just sell a iPhone of EU that sucks and give everyone else what you really want to make. It's insane the EU has any say on features. This is how you make a product suck. Let governments get involved.

While the first iOS 19 beta is still more than two months away, there are already plenty of rumors about the upcoming software update.

Generic-iOS-19-Feature-Mock.jpg

Below, we recap the key iOS 19 rumors so far.

visionOS-Like Design

In January, the YouTube channel Front Page Tech revealed a redesigned Camera app that is allegedly planned for iOS 19.

According to Front Page Tech host Jon Prosser, the Camera app will have more translucent menus and buttons, along with a larger viewfinder. The alleged design looks similar to visionOS, the software platform for Apple's Vision Pro headset.

Earlier this month, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said the visionOS-like design changes will extend to other interfaces on iOS 19, meaning that the new look with more transparency will likely extend to additional Apple apps, notifications, and more.

Gurman believes that iOS 19 will have the most significant design changes since iOS 7.

Similar design changes are also expected for iPadOS 19 and macOS 16.

Personalized Siri

Apple recently delayed the more personalized version of Siri that it previewed at WWDC last year. The company said it anticipates rolling out the Siri upgrades at some point "in the coming year," so the features could launch as part of iOS 19 later this year, but they are more likely to arrive next year in a later update, such as iOS 19.4.

Whenever they launch, the Siri upgrades will include understanding of a user's personal context, on-screen awareness, and deeper per-app controls. For example, during its WWDC 2024 keynote, Apple showed an iPhone user asking Siri about their mother's flight and lunch reservation plans based on info from the Mail and Messages apps.

Live Translate With AirPods

At least some AirPods models will be getting a new live translation feature with iOS 19 and an accompanying firmware update, according to Gurman.

Here is how that feature will work, according to his report this month:Google already offers a similar Live Translate feature.

He also said iOS 19 will have bolstered translation capabilities, which likely means improvements are coming to the Apple Translate app.

End-to-End Encryption for RCS

Earlier this month, Apple said that it plans to add support for end-to-end encrypted RCS messages to the Messages app in future iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS software updates. That likely means iOS 19, macOS 16, and so forth.

RCS-Feature-1.jpg

Apple promising end-to-end encryption for RCS messages indirectly confirms that it will be adopting the RCS Universal Profile 3.0 specification, which also includes several iMessage-like enhancements that were originally introduced in version 2.7 of the specification. iOS 18 supports RCS Universal Profile 2.4.

Here are five new capabilities to expect for RCS conversations on iOS 19:

  • End-to-end encryption, which will prevent Apple and any other third party from being able to read messages and attachments while they are being sent between devices
  • In-line replies
  • Edit messages
  • Unsend messages
  • Full-fledged Tapback support for RCS messages, ensuring they always work
iMessage conversations with blue bubbles have supported end-to-end encryption by default since iOS 5. In addition, iMessage has supported in-line replies since iOS 14, while the options to edit and unsend iMessages were introduced with iOS 16.

Apple has not indicated which iOS version will upgrade RCS, but iOS 19 or a follow-up update like iOS 19.1 or iOS 19.2 seems like a safe bet.

EU Changes

The European Commission this week announced a long list of changes that Apple is legally required to implement in future iOS 19 and iOS 20 updates.

iOS-19-Roundup-Feature.jpg

The announcement clarifies interoperability requirements that Apple is required to adhere to in the EU, under the Digital Markets Act, which has been fully enforced since March 2024. The changes will further open up the iPhone and its technologies to competing companies and devices, and Apple is not happy about it.

We will be publishing an in-depth overview of all of the requirements, but in the meantime we have highlighted some key items below... Click here to read rest of article

The EU needs to require apple to add Touch ID to its phones. For security reasons that should be a required. Perhaps the EU needs someone to suggest touch ID being a requirement.

So they're going full Windows Vista this time? TBH I do think there is a way to do a translucency-heavy design, something that uses 3D and spectral effects, not unlike the Amazon phone that tried the 3D thing (but totally messed it up), I could imagine some sort of subtle use of lighting, even raytracing, on a high def display, the devices are actually, actually powerful enough to do that now but will Apple do it? No. At this point I'm not confident in their execution on anything, as in it's more a surprise when things are done well, like the Mac hardware platform, and er a few other things, I suppose that AirPods Max firmware update would be good if they didn't drown themselves after being used for more than a few hours - not sure how DJs are going to take to that....

I’d rather they back off these yearly releases that at this point feel like they’re having to work really hard for selling points, like redesigns and AI for the sake of AI, I’d rather less frequent and more stable releases. iOS is mature enough it’s okay not having new features all the time.

yes, I would say the same for the iPhone hardware yearly releases, by all means update with the latest chip but surely we can understand there are only so many ergonomic and material choices that make sense, the arbitrary "change for change's sake" is sort of antithetical to great design (but not so much for the bottom line)

The EU requirements, while some are nice (like all watches be able to receive phone notifications) I wonder if it will throw a monkey wrench of massive proportions?

One of the ways Apple handles all of the seamless AirPods switching is thanks to the H1/H2 chips plus bluetooth/wifi (also maybe the custom security chipsets/enclaves?)… will the EU be unreasonable enough to make Apple the sole responsible for making it happen no matter the headsets? Or achieve a middle ground where third party headphones would need to comply with minimum hardware requisites, as in, it would need to have at least the same or better of the chipsets (Bluetooth, Hx, etc) found on the devices that currently support seamless switching.

Same for all the other secure-wireless related connections like: AirDrop connections, SideCar, Markup annotations on a close by iPad (like when taking a screenshot from Mac), etc.

Some of these even require being on the same Apple ID on the devices.

Let’s hope Apple will find a way to circumvent most, if not all, EU directives over time.
