OMG, this could be the end of iOS - and Apple.
On the other hand it matches Apples strategy. Apple can not deliver in terms of functionality like AI - so it changes the design.

This time will be the first time without Ive and without Steve. Good luck, Apple.

It is interesting to me how many people consider the introduction of the AVP to be unsuccessful. All you folks must think that the AVP should be another iPhone, instead of the new technology introduction that it really is. And it did sell more than 100,000 units at $3500 each which is a big chunk of change.

Much of the “failure’ opinions are, IMHO, Apple’s positioning it as a consumer device. Vision type devices, wetehr from Meta or anyone else, have never really caught on with consumers. Apple should position it in the commercial market, where its price point can be way lower than speciality devices in a number of industries. That, however , would require Apple to rethink its aproach to marketting to business and partnerships with companies that have industry specific experience.

This is fine but it’s just catching up to the glass UI macOS has had for quite a while now.

What would be helpful is more nuanced controls in widgets on the home screen and control center. For example, the VPN UI in control center is useless as just a simple toggle since you have to go to settings to select the server regardless. What would actually be helpful is a selection interface like the Bluetooth and wifi selections in control center.

I’d also like to see them make the OS more useful, rather than just a new label on an old bottle of wine. Make the home screen more customizable; for example, if you put shortcuts on it, let you create a control panle like screen or drop down list that lets you pick which shortcut to use. Let me add more rows of widgets. Let me change the date time font size. Let me change the time zone by swiping left on the date/time.

Some of this can be done by setting up the screen yo get with a sweep right but it would be nice to have a more customizable home screen and widget tools.

OTOH, must people don’t realize, for example, you can bring up wifi choices by pressing wifi on the control panel; so many adds would go unused and unknown.

At a minimum, you can expect iOS 19 to have a more simplified and translucent appearance, if these rumors are true.

It is funny how design concepts come in circles - remember the Aqua translucency in Mac OS X? It was really good looking back then and now will most likely be looking good again in iOS 19.

> As part of the push, the company is working to simplify the way users navigate and control their devices

Uh oh. Make Mac OS useless for power users and people who ... shudder ... do work on macs?

The redesign is undoubtedly easier.
Well, not sure about that. It's quite easy to make Siri far more intelligent and useful, and implement tons of useful AI features, but Apple is quite obsessed with not allowing any inappropriate output coming out of its AI agent. Having Siri saying something offensive, racist, sexist, etc could provoke a significant brand damage and Apple is just not ready to assume this risk. xAI developed Grok from the ground up in less than a year and it is far superior than Siri. So the problem is not technological, but almost political in nature.

A complete overhaul is necessary. iOS has looked the same since iOS 7 which is 10 years so far.

If they went back to using the Aqua style on the oled screens we have today with the animations that iOS 6 had it would be a dream

Apple should start with the basics:

number row on keyboard
pinch to zoom on maps in Carplay
swipe search within tracks in Carplay
universal back gesture instead of inconsistency

So iOS19 might be bug-riddled heavy mess that won't add much functionality and instead will slow down every device older than iPhone 16 lineup and kill the battery for all? Sounds like we've been here before (iOS7).

Take a very buggy piece of software.

Completely redesign it.

That’s definitely going to turn out well.

So they’re going to overall the software to match one of Apple’s least successful product launches ever? Interesting choice.
Software doesn't have anything to do with the failure of Vision Pro though. On the contrary, I've only seen praises.

It failed because of 3 things :

1. It's VERY expensive
2. It's still a 1st generation
3. It's a complimentary, dare I say "explorative" technology. Smartphones and computers are, on the other hand, a fundamental technology that pretty much everyone needs.

iOS' current design is very mature. They could just focus on performance and stability (and actually making Siri better!). If they want to do a major redesign that moves everything closer to the look and feel of Vision Pro, I really don't mind. It will make our tech feel a bit more exciting again. Yes, there will be bugs, but I would assume by now that they would be able to iterate quickly to squash them. Yes, most people just need their tech to work and not to be exciting, but I also miss the days when I was excited to get a software update that made me want to play with my tech. It hasn't been that way for a very long time.
