iOS 19 will not drop support for any iPhone models, according to French website iPhoneSoft.fr. The report cites a source within Apple.

The report said that iOS 19 will be compatible with any iPhone that is capable of running iOS 18, which would mean the following models:

  • iPhone 16
  • iPhone 16 Plus
  • iPhone 16 Pro
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max
  • iPhone 15
  • iPhone 15 Plus
  • iPhone 15 Pro
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max
  • iPhone 14
  • iPhone 14 Plus
  • iPhone 14 Pro
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13
  • iPhone 13 mini
  • iPhone 13 Pro
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12
  • iPhone 12 mini
  • iPhone 12 Pro
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone 11 Pro
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone SE (2nd generation or later)
The oldest devices in that list are the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR, all of which were released in September 2018.

Of course, some iOS 19 features will be unavailable on older iPhone models.

If this report is accurate, it would be the second year in a row in which Apple did not drop support for any iPhone models with its major annual iOS release. iOS 18 is compatible with the same iPhone models as iOS 17 is.

iOS 17 dropped support for the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X.

There is slightly worse news for iPadOS 19, as the report said that update will drop support for the iPad 7 from 2019. Fortunately, the report said all other iPad models that can run iPadOS 18 will be compatible with iPadOS 19 next year.

The first iOS 19 and iPadOS 19 betas should be released during WWDC 2025 next June, and the updates are likely to be released in September. Not many iOS 19 features have been rumored yet, but Siri is expected to become more conversational like ChatGPT in a later iOS 19.4 update, which is likely to be released around March 2026.

Makes sense, the iPad 7 is only supported strictly because it came out in 2019 and they wanted to make sure it had five years of support, mainly because it was the biggest education tablet during the pandemic.
But just going off of processors, it should have been dropped years ago with it’d A10, which was mostly abandoned with iOS 16.
The A12 was the first Apple chip with a neural engine, and was introduced on a product only back in 2020 with the A12Z iPad Pro, it makes sense they would keep those devices around another year or two.
The A13 was last used on the iPad ninth generation in 2021, it should receive updates until iPadOS 20 at least.

So 2027 and iOS 21 is probably the earliest that we will see A14/M1 and up, if not iOS 22 in 2028.

I hope it focuses on stability but I should know better by now. Never had a problem with my iPhone 12 until iOS 18.2, but the 18.2 update made it super unstable. The camera sometimes doesn’t work or freezes for a few seconds (wtf!) and most of the times, the Remote app doesn’t open from Control Center. I hate it.

I highly doubt A12 Bionic and A13 Bionic iPhone models will get iOS 19

A14 Bionic [iPhone 12 series] most likely will be the minimum...

I have iPhone 11 Pro Max running iOS 17.7 but if they bring back the pre-iOS 18 Photos app and undo other changes, like AirDrop Everyone for 10 minutes, and if iOS 18 iPhone models can upgrade to iOS 19, I may upgrade to iOS 19

iOS 19 + iPhone 19 [skip iPhone 17 and iPhone 18]

Hopefully wont be heavier for the older models
iOS 18 is already "heavier" for 11 and older. I doubt iOS 19 will be any lighter, especially thinking about how Apple will only add AI stuff and probably up iPhones 17 Pro RAM from 8Gb to 12GB or 16GB.

Most devices older than iPhones 14 or 15 will struggle tremendously due to low RAM even if their SoCs are fast enough to run newer iOS versions.

I guess Apple plans these things out very well.

And on that note, I highly recommend anyone with an iPhone 14 or older to not upgrade to iOS 18 or later. Not if you want to keep the device as long as possible.

Those have no issues running the newer OSs.

It's all going to come down to RAM -iPhones that lack it will struggle and lag without Apple needing to make them flat out incompatible.

Keeping iPhones <8GB RAM for years and years is something the shareholders are very thankful for.

Not sure about others' experience, but iOS 18 has been a dog on my iPhone XR. I wouldn't recommend upgrading unless you have to. I'm guessing 19 will be similar.
Apple will keep "updating" those devices yet they get slower and slower. It's an easy way for apple to kill two birds with one stone. Push the "we update our devices longer" while also pushing an update they know will tax the device and make users want to upgrade to a newer phone.

I guess you’re not buying another iPhone then. Have fun on Android! :)

I wouldn't rule out a future smaller iPhone of some kind
May not be called a Mini -- who knows

My 13 Mini is fine for many more years

BTW: I'd switch to Android in a heartbeat if there were a smaller device on that side, but there really isn't one there either. It's a total bummer for those of us who just need a small "communicator" and use tablets and computers for most everything else.

XS and XR would be huge. Both Google and Samsung state/guarantee longer support nowadays, but I love that Apple just actually delivers.
Seven years seems to be the new baseline across the major smartphone vendors, though it would be eight years for the XS/XR if my math is correct. Five years are more-or-less guaranteed by EU law.

It might actually be beneficial to Apple to support older models with new but slower iOS versions, if the slowness nudges people to upgrade sooner than they would have if they had to stay on the older iOS version. Otherwise many people only upgrade their hardware when the apps they use stop being supported on the last iOS version supported by the phone.
