Apple today confirmed that iOS 26.2.1 and watchOS 26.2.1 are on the way. The updates will likely be released this week, so keep an eye out as early as today.

watchOS 26.2.1 was mentioned in Apple's press release for the new AirTag today, and iOS 26.2.1 is mentioned in fine print on the new AirTag's product page.

While these will be minor software updates, they do include a few things:
  • The new AirTag requires an iPhone running iOS 26.2.1 or later, according to Apple.
  • With watchOS 26.2.1, you can use Precision Finding on the Apple Watch Series 9 and later and Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later to find a second-generation AirTag. Precision Finding on the Apple Watch does not work with the original AirTag.
Here is what Precision Finding looks like on the Apple Watch:

Beyond that, iOS 26.2.1 might include bug fixes and/or patch security vulnerabilities.

Update: Apple has released iOS 26.2.1 and watchOS 26.2.1.

New hardware understandably may need new software to work, because there is simply no way to anticipate the workings of a future device when writing software today.

Probably you will need iOS 26.2.1 for setup, and for precision finding, but I bet you can see its general location in the Find My app if you are still using older iOS...
[Edit] The press release does mention that this requirement is for precision finding.

I'm a little surprised at the timing, since iOS 26.3 should be just around the corner. Normally the X.3 release falls in late January. Maybe it will be later this year.

I saw 2 weeks ago that iOS 26.2.1 would be available soon:

A lot of people that’s still on iOS 18 ain’t gonna be happy with this😂 Apple said update to the latest and greatest update😂

Don't think I will update right away especially with the update being a very minor one. Think the update is primarily to support the new accessory announced.

Maybe it’ll fix whatever it is that Apple broke on my OG AWU2 with the last update. 94% battery capacity and went to bed last night with 53% and woke up this morning with 8%. That’s in low power mode and I don’t use any apps or maps, etc on the watch. It was never this awful before
