This will be so nice to watch video on my car's bigger screen while my car charges. Can't wait. But I'll probably have to wait, maybe indefinitely. I don't know if it will ever come to my '21 VW, but maybe... 😭🙏
I have a 2018 Tesla Model 3 - and purchased FSD with the car. I know *all about* waiting for software!

Meanwhile more and more cars disable the text bar on the car's screen while driving. "For safety reasons."

Because having to grab my phone, unlock it, open the GPS app, find the search bar, and then type my destination, then lock it, then it put it back in the phone cage, all while driving, is so much safer.

Because guess what, just because some dumb f "manager" decided I mustn't type while driving, I STILL need to get to my destination no matter what.

Good one. I was struggling to think of use cases where you’d park and still want to sit in your car. Cars are for getting from A to B. While you’re moving toward B this new feature would be disabled, and once you’re at B you get out!

Many states have a liberal interpretation of distracted driving (some consider it if the car is running even if not moving) so I hope Apple accounts for that.

If I'm already stopped and parked, why wouldn't I use the higher quality iPhone screen to watch videos instead of using the infotainment display?
Tell that to OnStar and their monthly subscription. After your month trial is up you can no longer watch videos while parked (oh noooo)

Hopefully it works better than SharePlay in CarPlay. The entire idea there is to share playlists in a roadtrip. But as soon as a phone loses mobile connection, they’re kicked out. They should have used Bluetooth or local WiFi for this feature instead of relying on mobile connections.

the UI is also a complete mess on this. For users that aren't familiar with Apple Music, people find a song they want to add to the list and tap it, expecting it to be added to the playlist.

But instead, that song starts immediately playing, interrupting the current song and deleting the song queue that others in the car have been adding to.

Apple should really prevent users on SharePlay from accidentally erasing the queue (unless they explicitly do it via a different submenu), but I don't exactly have high hopes of Apple caring enough about their software to fix this UX bug.

As it stands, SharePlay is pretty useless to me, because I can't be bothered to try to keep educating my friends on this, because someone ALWAYS forgets and then everyone's annoyed.

Does anyone know how CarPlay determines if the car is stationary or moving?

Asking, because I use a car stereo on our island cottage for music, and might be interested in something like this.

I think there’s an API that checks to see if the car is in Park.

If enabling video playback in CarPlay requires the vehicle to be in “Park,” it will unfortunately limit the feature to a relatively small number of cars. Many manufacturers are slow to update or add new functionality to existing models, which means a large portion of users may never gain access.

An alternative approach could be to require active GPS verification on the iPhone to confirm that the vehicle is not in motion. If the phone detects movement above a certain speed threshold, video playback could simply be disabled.

This would make the feature broadly compatible with existing vehicles, without relying on each manufacturer to implement specific “Park” validation systems. I wonder, if no one else has thought of this......

My infotainment is super high res. If I'm sitting in it whilst charging (which isn't often) I'd like to be able to watch something on the display AND have the surround of all the speakers in the car.

I was just about to post something like this. And it'll take eons for manufacturers to jump on board as we all know how fast they are...

Really unfortunate that they are leaving the implementation to require some kind of action from vehicle manufacturers, which basically guarantees we won't see this on any cars apart from 2027+ models where they might actually add it. Virtually none of them ever add features to already shipped vehicles, which is the entire problem CarPlay was solving.

Why does Apple do this to themselves? They need to stop showing features that are substantially delayed, not ready, or never make it market. It's become ridiculous lately.
They're not showing them though. People are digging around and finding them. You're on a website that makes its money from doing it, but are complaining about it.

Maybe just stop visiting macrumors lol
