Software Update said my iPhone 17 Pro Max was up to date but it wasn’t. It had iOS 26.5.2 installed and refused to do the update over the air. I did several troubleshooting techniques to force my iPhone to do the update over the air but nothing worked. The only solution was to connect my iPhone to my MacBook Air to do the 26.6 update and it worked but that defeated the purpose of a wireless over the air update without having to use a Mac.

I do tethered updates in Finder since 2016 and never had an issue. Of course I can appreciate not all folks having a Mac to be able to do that.

Actually, I got into the habit of doing this when my 64GB OG SE kept running out of storage for OTA updates to even occur. It was a battle to constantly offload Apps just to gain those couple GB.
