There are a long list of new features in iOS 26, some of which Apple highlighted at today's keynote event, and some of which were quietly added. We've rounded up some of the smaller changes but still useful changes that have been introduced in the update.

I think it makes sense to use the year to identify an iPhone model as well, as iOS 26.

Why using the year makes sense:

1. Unambiguous Identification

  • "iPhone 14" or "iPhone 15" tells you little unless you remember the launch year.
  • But “iPhone 2023” is instantly clear.

2. Industry precedent

  • Apple iMacs, MacBooks, and iPads use model years in technical docs and retail listings (e.g., iMac 2019).
  • Cars (Toyota Corolla 2025) always use model years — it’s the default.
  • Samsung Galaxy S24/S25/S26 are roughly aligned with years (S24 = 2024).
  • TVs: LG - 42" Class C4 TV (2024)
  • Microsoft Surface devices follow a mix of generation and year.

3. User-Friendly for Non-Tech Buyers

  • Most consumers don’t remember internal chip specs or “Pro Max Ultra XR” editions — but they do remember what year they bought it.
