EU Changes

In the European Union, there's a new EU-only API for developers that will allow third-party messages apps to send and receive RCS/MMS/SMS messages by default instead of the built-in Messages app.
Perhaps even a great idea to designate all the less useful SMS messages to a separate app I can forget about and keep iMessage (which I’ve managed to keep as my main messaging app here in Germany) for my actual messaging. If you have an iPhone I’m texting you on iMessage - not WhatsApp!

There is one thing I don't understand. If I turn on Unknown Senders , how will a delivery guys message come through ?

The app most unused in the world. Just USA uses it.
I'm in France and use it all the time. I only use WhatsApp when texting to family and friends in the USA or other countries outside of EU ,so I'm sure I'll will not to be overcharged on my plan if their phone is turned off or out of reach .

Very much like the customization options. Also waiting for live translation to support more languages.

If you turn on Unkown you have to accept that you wont get those notifications, much like Do Not Disturb doesn't show you anything you haven't specifically allowed in. You will get a badge in the Unknown group.

A good use for AI would be for it to recognize delivery related messages and allow those notifications; maybe send that feedback to Apple.

All good features, for certain folks! What would be great is ability to send view once pictures and videos like on WhatsApp.

“is ability to send view once pictures” ???
View-once sounds good, but the feature is somewhat of a security gimmick, and can be worked around without other security measures in place. There are easier and safer ways of sending data securely. That said, your first safeguard should be quick assessments of your trust relationship with the recipient(s) and their need to know the data you are sending.

If you want to copy just a part of a message, such as an address or a package tracking number, there's an option in ‌iOS 26‌ to do so. Long press on the message that you want to copy and then tap on the "Select" option.

THIS! is mindblowing u cant do that in 2025…

I would like to see delivery and read receipts in group messages. Right now, it behaves like an individual message that didn't send so I never know it was seen until the first reply. Maybe just a counter?

"Read by 4 people"

Just fix the iMessage/iCloud messages syncing bugs during the next few betas or even the RC/final build.

That would be terrible.

It's a security breach waiting to happen. Plus, how do parents shut this off? I mean, really, can you imagine your teenaged daughter coming home from school all depressed and down in the dumps because some ****** at school sent her a threat that disappeared moments after she read it?

No way. No no no way, "read once" and "view once" are terrible ideas!
It seems like you can block custom backgrounds, but it's an app-wide setting, not on a chat-by-chat basis. And if I'm right on that, I'll just turn it off then.
Me too. More on custom backgrounds a little ways down...
You sure can have background battles where you just swap back and forth. I would not be surprised to see spam messages start to include them, and while I haven't tried an NSFW picture, it seems to be possible to just choose whatever you want. Hopefully we get per-conversation options for this setting, because right now it's all or nothing.
Background battles are a horrible idea! Please read on...
Yes, there will be background battles! When any participant changes the background, the new background is instantly applied for everyone in the thread. This update syncs across all devices for all participants, provided they are running iOS 26, iPadOS 26, or macOS 26. I think that will be a great way to interject some playfulness and personality into chats beyond just message content.
This used to happen in email systems using Outlook and Microsoft Exchange. I had one particular team member who would send EVERY EMAIL with some polka-dotted simulated stationery "paper" look behind her typed words. I hated this because whenever I did a reply or a forward from her email, then MY OUTGOING email would have her "stationery" applied.

That's not my style! And as a leader in the company we were in, it wasn't the company's style either!

So every damned time she sent me an email and I needed to reply (which was probably 90% of the time), I would have to "convert to plain text", then convert back to HTML or RTF (I don't remember which), and THEN re-apply my Outlook signature.

And then if she replied to me, I'd get her background all over again! Oh God, please stop the madness; I just don't have time for background wars! Is there a way I can just disable it for the whole chat group...kind of like vetoing it? Sometimes, we humans just overcustomize way too much. We need to slow our roll!

If that was the new Lifesavors mint candy, I'd buy it in bulk from Sam's Club or Costco...that looks yummy!

I wholeheartedly agree. But I'm much more concerned about kids and teens receiving threats that disappear. Or adults. Can you imagine an estranged husband using this as a tool to threaten his wife? Or an employer saying/"hinting" that an employee needs to work some unpaid overtime in violation of labor law?

I say "no". Or if they're going to implement it, every user should be able to shut it off in their preferences. Kind of like a veto to other people's bad behavior.

Ooooh, now THAT would be GREAT! And would be better yet, if you could click or hover (I know, "hover" on an iPhone) and get a list of who read it...kind of like how MacRumors works with emoticon feedback/ratings.

I remember that annoyance and still encounter it in Outlook email about once per week! So I’m definitely not a proponent of background images in Email for the reasons you describe.

I use iMessage almost exclusively with family and friends who are playful and creative so I’m curious about dueling backgrounds in that context. Nevertheless, I agree that having a toggle to disable it would be a good thing.

I grudgingly like both text message copy/paste and especially tap back CarPlay emoji. Still, I consider myself firmly in the "no new features, fix the damn bugs instead" camp. Like, it boggles the mind that there's no legit way to force a sync between Photos in iPhone and Mac. Almost everyone I know just airdrops photos to Mac, which is just....clunky. More and more Apple product interactions are becoming clunky these days. Oh, Snow Leopard philosophy, how I miss you.

Even on my 11-inch iPad Pro, the bubble on the new iMessage app icon is incredibly difficult to see. In a fast look its just a shadow.

And take a look at the screenshots of the "Live Translation" feature. The bar above the keyboard almost disappears into the background.

I hope these are still the shots from the first BETA.
Otherwise, in reality—sunlight, twilight, shadows—no one will use this translucent design.

Wait, iMessage actually has a feature that WhatsApp and Telegram don’t already?
Send Low Quality Previews actually sounds like a nice feature.
The rest is just playing catch and losing, again.

It could be better, but Photos does display a "Sync Now" button if iCloud hasn't synced yet.

Oh, Snow Leopard philosophy, how I miss you.

Remember that one of the major reasons why SL fixed all those bugs was that it dropped legacy support and went Intel-only; I bet there are a lot of Intel Mac users who don't want a new Snow Leopard OS yet.

How is there still not a filter option that will only show unread messages? We should not have to scroll, looking for little blue dots, when we finally have time to catch up on messages.

I think we deserve more.
What about an archive feature? Disappearing messages? The ability to choose how many messages can be downloaded onto my Mac so it’s not taking up more space than I’d like?

It would be nice if it were a toggle on the main message window like you have on the Mail inbox screen, but this is how you do it now.

Messages that you send will show up in both your language and the translated language on your own phone, but the person on the other end will only see the message in their language. Messages they respond with will show their language and the translated language.
The screenshot shows that the opposite is happening.

Which screenshot are you looking at. The one I see shows your screen with the translation but doesn't show the other person's screen.

It wouldn't make sense for a Spanish-speaker to see English if you are translating Spanish to English.

From the article:
"Messages that you send will show up in both your language and the translated language on your own phone, but the person on the other end will only see the message in their language. Messages they respond with will show their language and the translated language."
