iOS 26 May Bring Full-Screen Animated Lock Screen Album Artwork

I would welcome this change. I like the full screen album art for newer albums and some older ones that have been updated which already support this. It looks way nicer than Spotify’s UI (this is obviously subjective but I hate their user interface and choice of fonts and buttons).

They always have toggles to turn such features off anyway. Not sure why it’s such a big deal to point out why you wouldn’t like this or want to use it.

Also I don’t get the point of “owning” your music but I do understand ripping or finding tracks that aren’t on Apple Music because I have some Indian songs that aren’t on streaming yet. It syncs well with iCloud match though.

I hate to sound like a broken record! but why can't they give us oldies more support on ripping cd's and syncing! I hate streaming, mainly cos I own all the stuff I want but the syncing between phone and Mac is broken!

I really wish they'd sell us lossless music on iTunes!
Do you keep your entire library of ripped CD's on your phone? Honestly, if you only streamed the stuff you owned, you'd save the time of not ripping. I'm not sure what it's called these days, but my library of CD's is automagically in my iTunes account library (iTunes Match, maybe), but I still have to "stream" that if I want to listen to my stuff. Truly not any more work than ripping.

Who looks at their phone, in the Music App in full screen mode, while it's playing music?

I would think it's either in your pocket, on a table with the screen locked/off or you're using a different App on it while music plays, and thus not seeing the "animated album art" anyways.

This seems like a really strange thing to be spending any dev resources on at all.

Apple Music could get more visual flair in iOS 26 with full-screen animated artwork coming to the Lock Screen, according to 9to5Mac.

The rumored feature would expand on recent changes to the Lock Screen's Now Playing view. Currently, maximized album artwork from the Now Playing widget tints the entire interface, creating a more immersive experience when controlling music playback.

iOS 26 appears set to take that concept further by introducing animated artwork that fills the entire Lock Screen, making album covers and other visuals more dynamic and engaging.

The new iOS 26 features are expected to be unveiled at the WWDC keynote event on Monday, June 9. It starts at 10:00 a.m. and while Apple will livestream it, if you can't watch, you can follow along here on MacRumors.com or on our MacRumorsLive X account. If you want to hear music in stereo, you need to put the iphone in horizontal view, but the phone information does not flip so you cant see the lyrics or info. You have to turn tour head. This is stupid. Apple please, flip the info.

I start my Apple TV as part of a Shortcut. iOS puts a remote widget on my lock screen whether I want it or not. No ability to remove it. No option to disable it.

I randomly see a Music widget on my Lock Screen for songs I’ve never played.

I don’t want either widget ever. I really wish this would be fixed.

I would absolutely never use this, but as long as there's a way to turn it off it's no skin off my back if others want to use it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm one of the weird people that likes to see the animated covers...There have been times when I thought a fullscreen animated cover on the Lock Screen would be cool...though probably heavy on the battery drain. Then I thought what if they take the full-screen cover art (no animations) as the lock screen, that would be cool.

So, I'd probably use it as I play music on the HomePod and it is nice to see on the lock screen while I am working. Perhaps this would be OK when charging...almost like a new StandBy display.

Earlier this year one song in a playlist of Apple Music I created became "unavailable" for a few months. I presume there was a licensing issue that has since been resolved because the track is back again. It was a bit annoying, not because that one song disappeared, but because it made me realize that this could happen to any of the songs I listen to regularly, without any warning or explanation.

I also have seen older versions of songs/albums become unavailable through streaming.

One specific data point is (laugh if you want but it's one of my favorite Madonna albums) Confessions on a Dance Floor. On the original CD, all of the tracks have studio cross-fading, which is the way the album was intended to be played (as a continuous dance mix), and that is the way it was ripped onto my phone. On Apple Music, this album is "lossless" and has an animated album cover, but no cross-fade. (The cross-fade feature in the Music app does not produce the same result as the studio version, it's not even close.) Also, the track "I Love New York" on Apple Music has an extra intro and outro that are not present on the original CD. All of this changes the entire listening experience of the album from the original.

Another data point is Beautiful by Ryan Farish. Apple Music only has the "deluxe version" but not the original release I purchased and downloaded from Apple many years ago. There is not a big difference in the album, but it make me aware that streaming is a dynamic environment where things may come and go or even change over time, and not necessarily for the better.

So owning is better for music I would really miss if it disappeared from any streaming service.

I have always wondered why this wasn't always a feature when animated artwork was introduced. Especially because it's also animated on the album list view along with the now playing view.

The Apple brain center decides that people want to watch their phones when playing music?

I think some would like to advertise to others the music they are listening to, like annoying teenagers at the back of the bus playing music loudly through a portable speaker...

On my part I could see huge disadvantage to this. Imagine: there you are at work, and a colleague leans over and sees this displayed prominently on the lock-screen of your iPhone...

I hope this feature can be turned off. Some things are best left private...

Yes!! Thank you.

I've had to redownload the same two albums for offline listening about 10 times each in the Music app over the past 3 weeks. Being able to see animated album artwork on my lock screen is the absolute least of my concerns with Apple Music.

I have a couple albums of my own on Apple Music, I wonder how I’ll get them to animate or if Apple takes care of that for me?

I have no syncing issues. Could you elaborate?

does ripping cds and syncing not work the same as it always did? I know I added some bonus tracks that way last year
It must be a few years Now but say I delete or update a playlist on my Mac and then plug in my phone it re syncs and duplicates playlists on the Mac each time. The initial sync works great but any follow up changes it messes up and can mess up artwork. The only work around I found is to unsync music from phone and then re add everything back which takes forever.

I bought a 1 TB iPhone for the purpose of keeping all photos and music stored locally.

I don’t listen to much new music so I have most of the music I want so streaming doesn’t make sense for me.. I feel I’m just paying a monthly fee to listen to stuff I already own.

most young people starting can easily
Start a cd collection cheaper as well as it’s for sale so cheaply on the 2nd hand market.

Long term it’s financially better I think

Ah, I listen to albums rather than create playlists, so maybe that's why I'm not seeing any issues.
But I'm not above editing metadata to merge songs into compilation albums of my own.
