I'd personally trust Apple to manage my call history, even if it involves collaboration with the authorities. They have an excellent track record of consumer protection. And as my late red-blooded grandfather used to say, "you ain't got nothing to worry about if you ain't got nothing to hide".

And cops can now just have you unlock your phone with FaceID and then can go through your call history without needing to do paperwork requesting information from the carrier.
Pro tip: always start the 'power off' proceedure before ever handing a phone to anybody by holding the side and voiumn up buttons. Then your passport is required even if the phone was not powered off. A court order is required to obtain ones unlock passcode (in most states :)

I really don’t see who would need this or a demand for this feature.
Android has had this since I can remember - the lack of this on iphone was one of the first annoyances I noticed when I started using an iphone.

I use it regularly

It's great the iPhone has this - if you're concerned about privacy, your mobile provider sends you itemised bills of every number you call anyway, which is logged.

Why would I care if the police could see my call log? I don't care that this call log is available but even more I don't care if the police, the government, NSA, CIA, IRS, DEA or Jesus sees my call log. Why would any one care unless they have committed a serious crime. Paranoia will destroy ya!

Just like setting a Wallpaper now requires a PhD, the new phone app is unnecessarily complicated.

To the tin-foil hatters, if this was introduced for government/law enforcement purposes or whatever, why do you think Apple would have built a consumer-focussed UX around it? If the data's on the phone and Apple want to give anyone access to it, they ain't going to go through the iOS interface. If the police want to know your call history, they don't just go into Phone>Recent and leave it at that.
This is a good point -- but just to play the proverbial Devil's Advocate... you're probably underestimating the creativity of true "tin-foil hatters." That type of person probably isn't nearly as concerned about this feature... so much as they are concerned about the underlying data which made the feature possible in the first place, and which has been hiding away on our iPhones for years without most people ever realizing it.

Consider this hypothetical: If law enforcement has obtained access to a suspected criminal's call history via this UX, that might -- and that's a big might -- be useful to them, if they know precisely what they're looking for. That is of course rarely the case. However, if they have this level of access, that suggests that they also have physical control over an unlocked phone... and depending upon the circumstances, the level of actionable information they could gather via the UX is going to be minimal and potentially even a waste of valuable time, compared to what they could get by just connecting a cable to the device and creating a full backup for offline perusal.

Call history seems to be limited to the last 2.5 years; checked a few long-term contacts and there's no history prior to April 2023.
I checked my family members and the farthest back it went for me was 2020.

I've been calling them much longer of course, so I'm not sure what the cut off is.

“Viewing the new extended history screen can come in handy when you need to recall when you last spoke with someone.”
Hmm… that assumes that the only time you speak to people is via the iPhone! 😂

Don't know about you, but we have many conversations in person, at parties, on outings, at work, etc. No phone involved.

Oh, we also still talk on our landline phone, as I’m sure others talk via VOIP.

Does this require one to not clear their recents list? I tried this and only have one call listed. I tend to erase my recents regularly.
