… I’ve got a 2022 F-150 with the 12” screen. Pinch to zoom doesn’t work on Waze, Apple or Google Maps.

Not really. I can pinch and drag in my car on my friend's Android Auto but not in carplay. I can't listen to whatsapp audio messages or reply with audio either. Android let's you play, replay and even transcribes on screen while you are listening / recording.

Still no ability to manually manage zoom level on maps. I have a ten inch screen and Apple maps keeps the zoom level at about 1/10 of a mile.
Do you leave all your personal information in the car after you leave? Rental cars always have multiple users stored data available for perusal.
My LC500 doesn’t have a Spotify app, so I use the Apple CarPlay one, but was shocked to find it doesn’t have a text to search function - I can only use Siri. So here’s a fun game for all the family: see who can get the dumb bitch to play Angine de Poitrine, because I bloody well can’t. Her/its first attempt was Deborah Cox! Hoping for any improvement in Siri’s nigh-on useless capabilities.

No but you’re smart to ask. I have a routine I go through while filling the car back up before dropping it off: go through all the cubbies collecting trash and anything else I might have left on accident, do a quick walk around taking photos for my reference in case any damage “magically” shows up after I drop it off, and finally go through the settings and delete my phone and info and set it back to factory. I’m usually done by the time the pump clicks off.

you can. but only in fullscreen mode, not in dashboard (tile) mode.

First, I’d really appreciate it if the cursor would retain the “Cursor in Direction of Travel” setting once it’s been set.
Second, it would be great if the battery icon were visible even when the iPhone is connected via a cable.
Third, I’d prefer it if my CD collection were sorted chronologically (as it is on my iPhone) rather than alphabetically in CarPlay.

Because there is people like me: I won't buy a car without Carplay. I don't care for the crappy experience, often with subscriptions, of carmakers' navigation or music systems.

There are certain manufacturers that insist they have perfectly fine apps and no need for CarPlay/AndroidAutos.
Having lived with Tesla's apps, I can safely call BS on it. Apple Music is "passable" while YouTube (which should be perfect for a charging stop) is a stuttering dumpster fire. Audible can scramble your bookmarks. SiriusXM is a cash grab that demands a new, separate subscription instead of allowing you to log in to your existing subscription (which allows streaming).
I'm planning on a Rivian to replace my wife's Camry (for 'reasons') and I don't think they have enough software developers to handle over 100 apps like CarPlay has - THOSE apps each have their own development team.
I'd far prefer those apps in a window on the main screen. Heck, the Rivian even has a driver's screen as opposed to Tesla's "One screen fits all" design. You could put the window on the main center screen and still have the important stuff on the driver's screen.
Oh - and if new apps come out that demand more CPU power? You can, if you want, upgrade your phone to handle it. The computer in a car is pretty much locked in time.

I've always wondering about that. I get that maybe they don't want folks touching the screen to press the zoom buttons on the far right hand side, but that requires far more movement and attention than a simple pinch zoom.
I have a Tesla Y. I did a car swap for a couple of days and am driving a new Chevy truck, think it is a Silverado. That being said it has Apple CarPlay and it does feel like going back in time in terms of quality, looks and usability compared to the Tesla UI. The pinch to zoom one is annoying and I remember wishing the was possible back when I had my 2021 Subaru outback. Zooming in and out is just cumbersome. I am using Waze in the truck as I prefer the simpler maps on it. The lagginess of it as well is off-putting. Not sure if this is the case with all cars. This truck is using CarPlay wirelessly so I am sure that can't help.
The video thing is not that big of a deal for cars that are not electric in my opinion. Where it is good with an EV is if you are sitting and charging for 15 mins, you can watch some YouTube. Not sure I ever really sat in park in a gas car for long periods of time where I would want to be able to watch on the screen. That being said a nice addition if it can play smoothly. Hard to imagine navigating YouTube videos in this Chevy truck based on the slow response from the touch screen.

Why? It can only work when the car is stationary. If the car is moving, it has to switch to audio only mode. That is why integration with the vehicle is required, CarPlay has to know when the vehicle is parked and when it is moving (GPS is probably not accurate enough/it cuts in only once the vehicle starts moving, not when the driver puts the vehicle in gear and should be getting ready to drive away (i.e. looking around, checking blindspots etc.).
Just had a look on my Tavascan, some of the features are there and it reacts much faster than under iOS 26. Set the wallpaper to match the Cupra colour scheme (copper). But no manufacturer update, yet, and we don't get new Siri here, but the car comes with its own onboard AI and farms out more complicated questions to ChatGPT automatically.

I got a new company car a couple of weeks back the first time I've had more than Bluetooth for audio in a car. It does make a huge difference, especially on a long journey, when my list of podcasts runs out and I can simply tap Audible on CarPlay and select a book, doing it through Siri was always hit-and-miss, especially as I am in Germany, but listen to some English language audio books. That could really confuse Siri.

Mine (Cupra Tavascan, the same basis the Ford Explorer EV and Ford Capri) has pinch-to-zoom on the onboard navi, but Google Maps and Apple Maps on CarPlay don't.
I think it depends on the car, my Cupra Tavascan is very slick and fast in CarPlay, faster than the native software, but the native navi has pinch-to-zoom, which the CarPlay maps don't have.

Why Apple can't you trust me with live or any weather map like Tesla, Ford, and Stellantis vehicles?
Apple added support for this recently, I think in iOS 26. The car has to support it, however. Among our household’s vehicles, our 2019 Ram 1500 with the big vertical screen supports it.
Note there is a gesture that pre-dates pinch-to-zoom: double-tap-and-drag either up or down. This is much easier than hitting the plus/minus zoom buttons and it think has worked in every car I’ve tried.
I’m pretty sure park status does get sent to CarPlay by the car. Otherwise, CarPlay in our Hyundai wouldn’t be able to restrict the keyboard in Maps to when you’re in park versus not moving — which it does. (And is very annoying, as it complicates adding a destination real quick at a stop sign or light.) Our other cars either restrict it to when you’re not moving (but can still be in drive) or below some near-walking speed. It seems like Apple can take speed and park information from the car to enforce whatever limitations the car company wants.
Sadly, it sounds like Apple still hasn’t added a way to lock North up in navigation mode. Like literally every other nav software I’ve ever used.

Never let the facts get in the way of a good criticism. Where was it publicly ever said there was be ZERO new features. Is that even a realistic interpretation of any statment made by a company with over 1 billion active users?

I already have video watching capabilities hahahaha so many options to watch videos while driving.
It’s the car telling the phone when it’s in motion. I have a car (2017 Chevy Bolt) with wired-only CarPlay. It restricts the scrolling length when I start moving. I plugged in one of those cheap wired-to-wireless converters, and the converter doesn’t pass that information along. Now I can endlessly scroll even while driving at highway speeds. This gives me hope that there may be aftermarket accessories that will allow video over CarPlay on cars that aren’t updated by the manufacturer to support it.
