I mean I’m not against it. It will keep scammers from profiting. I never have stopped paying for a iPhone, but now I know there will be some framework that could put my iPhone in restricted mode running in the background.. waiting 👀

If so, it might be good to go ahead and read the book, because I don't actually think that is a particularly close parallel to any of the government actions reflected within its pages.

We seem to have very different interpretations of the book. From my reading, Big Brother was a reference to the government, and how they were invading the personal lives of citizens in the most insidious of ways, suppressing objective truth in favor of a party line narrative, and even literally changing the entire language to support their ideals.

The Slashdot (ne 9to5Mac) story you linked is related to a commercial entity -- not the government/Big Brother -- attempting to protect their lease revenue. This includes not just those customers who fail to pay their monthly bill, but also would-be criminals who obtain a leased device with the intent of not actually paying for it at all and then attempt to sell it on the secondary market as quickly as possible to make a quick buck.

Not at all the same thing.

You don't get it. It's not what's going on right now. It's how this same framework could be used in the future. It's like a switch waiting to be turned on. Now that they have the switch, it could be used for other things in the future.

The far left/right don't usually just show up one day and change everything, it's a slow change over many years.

But also the threat of worldwide dictatorship is bigger than ever now. The use of the internet could mean digital war and conquering overnight through hacking/exploits in hardware/software that run the whole of society.
