iOS 27 Introduces New 'iPhone Handoff' Feature

Interesting 🤔. I tried this with two eSIMs (multi-sim), both with the same phone number, earlier this year. It essentially worked, but iMessage was completely confused by this setup and I had problems with failed iMessage and FaceTime activations all the time. Had to abandon it because of this.

The biggest drawback when using two iPhones is that your Apple Watch can only be tethered to one device. Real bummer. Maybe they also solved this in iOS 27? That would be really awesome.

I was thinking the same thing... I pay $15 for a watch w/ a hidden phone number that I never use which basically does what this feature would do for 'free' maybe?
 
Multisim have been pretty common in Germany for like forever. I have been using the same sim simultaneously on an iPhone, two Android devices and a tablet for years. If someone calls me, all devices ring but once I pick up the call one device, the other devices stop ringing. Data is shared among all of them

I currently use an iPhone, a Oppo Find X9 Ultra and a Galaxy Fold8. Since I obviously don't want to leave the house with three phones all the time, thanks to "multisim" it doesn't matter which device I decide to take with me for the day, I'll always be reachable on the same number. The Oppo device is usually my "camera" and the Fold8 for everything else.

Generally works well. But you will be in trouble when you use two iPhones and want to activate iMessage.

I hope iOS 27 fixes this.
 
People might hesitate to buy an iPhone Ultra if they take public transit or like partying, concerts, going to the beach, etc, and other settings where a 2K+ phone might not be advised (you can drop it, loose it on a late night über, get it stolen at a bar, get if filled with sand).

Apple now has a solution: have a cheap, say, iPhone 13 Mini for some situations and still get the Ultra for everything else.
 
Ok, it seems they forgot about this

You work from the user experience and then go to tech and not the other way around.

It seems to me some of the use cases is just from “how can we leverage this new thing”
 
This feature would be great if it could run on my iPhone SE1's

Would love to "grab and go" on those when I'm heading out for exercise and just want some music, connectivity and the camera.

This feature is terrible for cheaters. I assume the point of this is to keep everything in sync between the 2 phones so you can switch back and forth seamlessly without skipping a beat. So therefore everything you do on one phone is recorded and sync’d to the other. This is the opposite of what you want if you’re cheating or trying to hide any activity.

This. Curious if Apple has implemented a way alongside this to pair your Apple Watch to the secondary phone because that would be a big miss if they haven't figured it out.

Apple sold an estimated 26 million minis (12/13). That's a small number for Apple, a big number for everyone else.

Apparently that was more than all the Samsung Galaxy s21/22 models during the same time period.

You only need to sync what you want. Phone calls and SMS's are the only things that will automatically "sync" between the 2, you don't even need to use same iCloud or iMessage, and you can even have 2 different block lists. Off the top of my head, one could do nefarious things on one phone using specific apps, but still receive the same phone calls and SMS codes. So, for example, if one's significant other called while they were on the secret phone, the call would come through as normal.

The only legitimate things I can think of with this is: 1) if you have both a work and a personal phone, but wanted both numbers on each one, or 2 numbers on one; 2) you use your phone more than the battery can last between charges, and need to switch over, but remain all the same access to phone calls and SMS.

Numbers being "locked" to a specific carrier (and requiring porting to move) is a huge lock-in that increases price and decreases competition. Having numbers be more independent of carrier plans would be massive.

This isn't something Apple can do without becoming a carrier themselves. Handling of phone numbers is governed by national regulations, and "carrier" is exactly the entity that manages a given number under the respective regulation.
