I hadn't previously had a proximity sensor issue. I upgraded to iOS 4.0.1 and in a 30 minute call tonight my phone muted 7 times and hung up once. I noticed that moving it ever so slightly to a new position on my ear was enough to cause the phone to light up as though I pulled it away from my ear, but the phone was touching my ear the entire time. I am really frustrated now.

I hate to be the one to tell you this, but... Your iPhone 4 ALREADY had the proximity sensor issue. You just hadn't experience it yet. But now that you've found the magic spot, you get to experience it all the time! :)

I did some research on the forum and it was suggested that resetting the network setting on the phone could help. I did that, reboot and I have not been able to reproduce the problem. Not saying it is gone but I'll keep an eye out for it.

Yep...

More than likely you're just now noticing a problem that was already there.

I have yet to update, and I've had mine accidentally put callers on hold numerous times, but only when I'm holding the phone between my shoulder and my ear.

Frankly the proximity issue, which gets little media attention seems just as frustrating as the reported antenna issue. Especially considering it's worked fine in every version prior to the iPhone 4.

Indeed you're correct....

My 3G has never done it in the 2 years I've owned it...

I have a proximity issue as well and it's driving me nuts. I was on the phone last night and multiple times it switched to speaker mode or my phone went off into contacts or something else. Drove me nuts. That's my only complaint.

X2 .... If it didnt have this problem I would be 85% happy with this phone (I'm reserving 15% for this crappy bluetooth functionality this new phone has as well).

It is the single most annoying....annoying is not even the correct word. My grandmothers old flip phone doesn't have this issue, not to mention my old 3GS. Welcome to the club, and i pray that apple addresses this, or I may have to return this and get something else.
