I'm new to all this iPhone unlocked and jailbreaking, so could you guys please tell whether it's possible to unlock an iPhone 4 with iOS 4.1 and Baseband 02.10.04?

It can be jailbroke but not unlocked.

Not unless you can get it factory unlocked. A new unlock will probably come out in time.

Is the jailbreak for 4.1 untethered on iPhone 4? Or is there no difference between 4.1 and 4.2.1... i.e. both are tethered JBs so what's the point, might just aswell update to 4.2.1?

4.1 is untethered.
4.2.1 tethered.

I used GreenPois0n for 4.1 and RedSn0w for 4.2.1 and haven't had any problems.
