How do you even see it? In order for it to come on its up to your ear and you cant see the sensor when it's there. Sorry for sounding dumb but what do you do to get see it?

The sensor must be on all of the time that a call is in progress (and speakerphone is switched off).

The whole point of the sensor is to tell when the phone is being held up to the ear - it can only do that if it's on all of the time.

Uh my 3GS has had that for a while now.

Maybe Apple forgot to turn the proximity sensor on in 4.0.x? :D

I can't see it unless I look through another camera like my Blackberry. I wonder if my cat can see it?

Now that you mentioned it and I just made a call with my phone. The PS does glow red... very faint, but it's there. I'm in a darker corner of the house but ya, I could see it.

Apple is indeed pushing more current through the infrared LED as part of their fix. The more you put through an infrared LED, the more chance of it spilling over into the visible spectrum. I took some before an after update pictures to illustrate this. Keep in mind these pictures were taken with my other iPhone which can see infrared light clearly. To me the light is only very faintly visible.

mine displays a strong red dot where the prox sensor is... no issues with it though lol

someone should make an app that uses the proximity sensor to control their TV

I don't think the two IR signals are within the same IR band for that to happen. Just like the IR port on laptops or a PDA can't control a TV.
