iOS 4.2.1 Jailbroken + Cydia ready for 4.2.1 Confirmed by Redmond Pie, We should be good to go just a few hours after the official released. :D:D:D (My iPad rejoices)

Redmond Pie reports today that iOS 4.2.1 has been successfully jailbroken, and that a compatible version of Cydia will be available as soon as 4.2.1 reaches the public. This build of iOS can be jailbroken with Redsn0w version 0.9.6b2, the same used with iOS 4.1.

The current version of Cydia is incompatible with iOS 4.2.1 and crashes upon launch. However, a working build is ready to go and will hit your jailbroken phones by the time you've got 4.2.1 installed. Until you get it, Redmond Pie suggests installing jailbreak apps via SSH.

Nice.
So the next public release will be 4.2 or 4.2.1?

I'm pretty positive it will be 4.2.1, no reason to release 4.2 at this point, all Apps are being update for 4.2.1 as we type/read this. (got an insider tip from a friend that works for a "large" game developer, that the 4.2 submission wasn't going to make it life that they needed to updated to 4.2.1 and re-submit - let's just keep that between us :D)

You can but Cydia isn't working yet on it yet so it's fairly useless. I've heard you can install cydia apps over USB (using something like PhoneDisk or iPhoneExplorer) but I'm not sure how easy that would be.

Yeah, It is jailbreakable now, but cydia build that actually runs on 4.2.1 is not going to be public until the firmware is public too. You can install app that are working using SSH if you know how.

So the question is, is it tethered?

I would assume it is but I would just oh-so-love to be wrong about this :D

I've got an iPhone 4 running 4.2.1 jailbroken using RedSn0w 0.9.6b2 and I can turn it off and on again at will without having to plug it in to my Mac to complete the boot process. Therefore, untethered.

Edit: It's actually semi-tethered

I've jailbroken 4.1.2 on an iPhone 4, got SSH working and got Cydia patched to work. It's certainly buggy and a pain to get working (the instructions aren't always right) but it works. I'm in the middle of restoring now after using aptbackup (stupidly) as I'm sure some apps aren't updated for 4.2.1 yet. Will definitely do it again and install each app one at a time.

[EDIT] I did mess around with AirPlay and LOVED it. Pandora streaming from my phone to my Airport Express connected to my 7.1 HTS is just awesome without wires. SOOOOO worth the upgrade.

[EDIT2] After trying to install some Cydia apps with crashing results I'm downgrading to 4.1. Sure Cydia works but none of the apps I needed are updated yet so it's fairly worthless.

That was a fun and relaxing distraction for a lazy Sunday. I really can't wait for 4.2.1 to become official and the apps to be updated. AirPlay really is that good.

[EDIT3] So I'm using 4.2.1 now because I could downgrade to 4.1 but it would boot past the Apple logo. I'll be without a jailbreak till the new one is released unless I try again.

Looks like 4.2.1 hits the servers officially today at 1:00 p.m. EST

4.2.1 jailbreak and updated Cydia are ready to go upon 4.2.1 release. Seems like the question is whether or not jailbreak will be untethered...

I would encourage people to WAIT until there has been an untethered jailbreak released by one of the teams.

There will most likely be an untethered release, but we will probably have to wait if @comex doesnt want to waste an untethered exploit. It really depends on if 4.2.1 really is a stable release like 4.1 was.

I assume that updating to 4.2 using TinyUmbrella will preserve the baseband as it did with the release of 4.1, yes?

according to the dev team:

iPhone 3G and 3GS unlockers will be covered by our upcoming unlock. Stay away from any updates to Apple FW until our official release and you’ll be okay. Just stay away from all Apple IPSWs :)

iPhone4 unlockers are not left out in the cold. @sherif_hashim has found some very promising avenues to pursue. Those will be explored as soon as possible after all the 4.2 madness.
