I'm having problems and need help. I have redsn0w 0.9.6b4 (Mac version) and when I try to jailbreak the phone (iphone 3Gs from 2009 week 20) it makes it through "phase 1" and when waiting for the reboot, I get an unexpected error in redsn0w and the iphone has a white screen until I unplug it from the USB cable which is connected directly to my mac mini.

This has happened twice. I have no idea what the problem is. Can anyone help?

It sounds like currently if you jailbreak that every time you reboot you need to plug your iPhone into your pc/mac to boot up...

The current RedSnow jailbreak is tethered and WILL upgrade your baseband. Recommendation to new or novice jailbreakers to WAIT!

Everyone else already knows what to do and hopefully we will see untethered before Turkey Day!

Same here.

After trying the same thing about 10.000 times, I decided to reboot my Mac. After that, it worked flawlessly.

I've been rebooting after every failed attempt and tried different USB ports - same result. I might try a full restore in case something is mucked up on the phone's file system.

All I really want is to change the carrier string. I had used Caption Crunch years ago and it kept my personal string across every firmware upgrade except 4.2.1. I liked that personalization, but am starting to think it's not worth the aggravation to get it back. I miss Caption Crunch - so simple and no jailbreak was needed.

is it a still tethered? I think it is.

Just so you know the 4.2.1 jailbreak on the iPod Touch 2G and iPhone 3G/3Gs (old bootrom only) is an untethered jailbreak.

Just to split hairs, it looks like the 4.2.1 JB on the iPhone 4 is a semi-tethered JB. This means that you can still use the device (as opposed to no ability to use it at all in the field after a reboot), but the JB functionality will not be operable.

Speed Increase

Anyone else noticed a speed increase in Cydia loadtime after the jailbreak?

3GS Old Bootrom

Ok, so I never got it to work with my coreduo mac mini. Today I decided to try it on my macbook core2duo system and it worked the first time.

I lost all my songs, videos, etc since my macbook has a skeleton install of my iTunes account, but no big deal. I hardly ever use it as an ipod, so I can wait until I'm home to sync it.

I'm not sure why the mac mini didn't work.

Im not spending too much time around these parts that much, but can anybody confirm that 4.2.1 will get an Untethered jailbreak? Because I actually think it wont be worth it to upgrade to 4.2.1 and lose the untethered ability.

Also, I've upgraded baseband with every upgrade. Is 4.2.1 getting a new baseband?

New baseband = yes

Tethered vs. untethered = it depends on your hardware. Check update2 in the current post at http://blog.iphone-dev.org/

Feedback from Singapore

Hey guys,

OK, I'm a bit stioupid and impatient but this morning I decided to upgrade from 4.0.1 to 4.2.1 using the method described here:

http://www.redmondpie.com/jailbreak...h-4g-3g-2g-with-redsn0w-0.9.6b2-how-to-guide/

I end up with Cydia and Safari not working, jailbroken apps missing (including BiteSMS) but overall a functioning device with HDR and all my data (phew!)....

So now I need advice:

What should I do now? Wait? Downgrade or is there already some ways to get Cydia up and running?

SHould I downgrade to 4.1? back to 4.01? (mmmh no fw backup I think)

Thanks !!

I had to reboot using Redsn0w after jailbreaking before Cydia would run. Something the instructions at RedmondPie left out.
