Screen lock

I will be shot to pieces for this but I wish Apple left the screen lock slider for what it was. First: slide a switch. Now: double click the home button, swipe the dock and tap the screen lock button. Bah!

Or maybe foreshadowing the future of MM as a free service for all?

I'm going with no, Mobile Me will not become a totally free service.

certain parts of it could be free, such as FMIP and syncing and perhaps a very limited space email account (no more than 1gb) but the galleries, idisk etc will likely stay paid. Might be a smaller amount but I'm thinking there will be a charge. Say perhaps this $69 a year they discount it to when you buy it with anything these days (okay anything that can actually access it).

So if I understand correctly, the FREE Find your iPhone will only work on IOS 4.2.1 devices. You have to set it up on a 4, an iPod 4, or an iPad, but you can then use it from a 3 or 3GS.

However, if you have used a friends 4 to set it up, but only have a 3GS, and it gets stolen, do you have to borrow a 4.2.1 device to find your 3GS? Or can you go online? I have MM, but I think those with only one device, will not have the online search without subscribing to MM.

Jesus Apple, they cant even put an update on a server so we can update getting multiple failing attempts. Apple are a bunch of *****. If you say the update is available then let people download the ****in thing.

indeed. How dare Apple have servers that have connection limits. This is an outrage. A serious design flaw. Their servers should give everyone in the world lightening fast connections all at the same time. And every ISP should give Apple priority over everything else that might be downloaded or uploaded. Don't they understand how important it is that everyone gets this update RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!

The're making it consistent with the iPhone. Is it now a mute switch?

As Apple chooses to release updates in this manner, they should ensure that it works.

Error 1604...

I got error 1604 when trying to do a restore to iOS 4.2.1 on a Iphone 4.

Here is how i fixed it...

How to go about fixing 1604 iPhone restore error? Thousands of iPhone users are plagued with this issue. You may have also come across many articles asking you to do this and that but ended up with the same error. Well, I cannot guarantee that what is written here will help you in your quest to fixing 1604 iPhone restore error so do it at your own risk.

Steps to fixing 1604 iPhone restore error:

1. There is no need to reinstall iTunes or whatever. Keep the same version that you have used to restore or backup previously.
2. Make sure that iPhone is disconnected from your computer and that iTunes is closed.
3. The following step of fixing 1604 iPhone restore error is Windows XP specific, if you are a Mac user, you may have to locate the folders yourselves as I am not sure: Go to folder C:\Documents and Settings\<username you use to login to windows>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates. You will see one or more files. Cut and paste them somewhere else. Do not delete them in case the steps does not work for you, you can still copy them back to the folder. You can find out your username by doing a Ctrl-Alt-Del. If somehow you cannot find the folder, you are probably in the wrong user directory.
4. Launch iTunes and put your iPhone in recovery mode. Refer to this article on Unable To Restore iPhone on how to do put iPhone in recovery mode.
5. Proceed with restore and iTunes will download the update online. If you are downgrading to a lower version, do step 3 and leaving only the firmware file that you want to downgrade to. Double click on the file and iTunes will begin the restore.

For all the people complain with Iphone 3, 3GS and old itouches and old appleTV...get a new Ipad, Iphone 4, Itouch 4 and Apple TV 2.

iOS 4.2.1 rocks!

Thanks for the tip, I've put that on now and that really does solve my concern - although I'd like to see Apple put something in place themselves.

No problem -- my thought with locking that out is it should prevent the "layman" from picking up your phone, deactivating "find my iphone", and then snooping through all your stuff.

Since they can't deactivate the "Find my iPhone" you can remote lock them out, and even remote wipe the phone while they are trying to pry into your stuff.

So what are the advantages of 4-2-1 for 3gs users? I can't see any so far

AirPlay

AirPrint

And if you also own an iPad, iPhone-4, or iPod Touch (4th gen) you can activate a MobileMe "Find my iPhone" account and then use that account from your iPhone 3Gs to register to it to be found, or use your 3Gs to find the other devices.

That's exactly how I feel.

My phone is insured, there are far worse things that could happen than me being unable to get the phone back.

I'd just rather know that someone isn't going through my contacts, calendars etc.

You can use any iOS device with the Find My iPhone app or use the website, the only restriction is in creating the account.

Just updated my iPhone 4 and my wifes iPhone 3gs. I looked in About on both phones an noticed:

My iPhone 4 is 4.2.1 (8C148)

Wifes iPhone 3gs is 4.2.1 (8C148a)

My Iphone4 updated like a charm.:)
It's always best to download separately and then update. I never press the download and update button.

I had a bit of a scare. When I opened my Ipod selection it said I had no content and to go to Itunes to get some. What?? I have over 20gig of content on here and I confirmed that via the iphone About screens. It would not show up until I reconnected it to my laptop, accessed Itunes and selected Music on the Iphone. They were all there, so I played one AC/DC tune and that woke it up once I went back to the phone view itself.
Weird huh?

It's getting hot in here from all the flaming!

Ok. Calm down. It's just a feature and, as Apple has a habit of doing, they may backtrack on this one and allow 3GS users this feature for free also. If not, it's not the end of the world. Seriously, we all need a bit more peace in our lives.

:)

+4.2.1 :D

Much ado about nothing. I have a 3GS and an iPad and FMi works perfectly on my 3GS. So, it's not just iPhone 4. You just need one current Apple device. So we 3GS users aren't completely shut out. I do think it's disappointing for 3GS users but just relax.

Don't forget Safari web page text search....I've been waiting for that one.

Btw, why is it taking 7 hours to download here in Japan?

EDIT: Restarted the download....After a few restarts of the update I got it to download in only 7 minutes.

The install crashed half way and gave an error. I had to restore the phone and now all my settings are gone (all apps and music are back in place although the apps are now out of their folder). It's a mess, but I have ios 4.2 running :)

I have 2 devices , iPad and iPhone. Both updated with no problems:)

Got them both updated, had to use another Mac.

Could not escape the 1013 error code on my iMac not matter what I did. Never had that problem before.

Strange thing, when I updated iPhone, my MM account showed an invalid password for about 10 min. Could not sync, showed that my MBA has never synced, and could not get mail. Very very strange behavior.

Then, it just started working; however I could log into mobile me online.
