I don't have tethering enabled on my account, at the moment, but I have the same option in place of tethering on my 3GS. I suspect it only links through Bluetooth only, though. They probably just use the name Personal Hotspot for both types of tethering.

Apple have renamed tethering to Personal Hotspot, but WiFi is only available on the iPhone 4. My Wife has tethering enabled on her 3GS and it's USB or Bluetooth only. Fortunately, the iPad now supports Bluetooth tethering so she can use it to to her 3GS

Really? Have to test this tonight :)

Wifi uses tons more battery than bluetooth. Is it true that the ipad can tether via bluetooth now? I haven't heard about that. That is big news if true.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8F190 Safari/6533.18.5)

What did the 3Gs get in this update? It would seem nothing. No SMS ringtones, no hotspot...

That's huge right there, any info on how much battery life we can get with bluetooth tethering? I have no need for wifi hotspot if the ipad can tether via bluetooth without a jailbreak. We should be able to break the 6-8 hour mark with bluetooth tethering i would think.

Do both devices need to be 4.3?

I went into my local best buy and tried with a iPad 1 running an older iOS and couldn't get them to see each other.

Is there a trick to get them to work?

yes, the iPad also needs to be updated to iOS4.3 for it to pair with your iPhone over Bluetooth. I've tested it with my 3GS and iPad, both running 4.3

Can the iPhone be on 4.1 or 4.2.1 using official tethering and BT tether to a 4.3 iPad?

Yep, sure can. Just tried this today with my iPhone, running 4.2.1 JB with TetherMe on it, and an iPad 2. Paired right up, the link symbol appeared on the pad, and the pad surfed flawlessly. Nice!

Thanks, I will test again when i can get to the apple store and play with an ipad 2 ( or ipad 1 running 4.3)

My unmodified iOS 4.3 iPhone4 tethers via V1 iPad iOS 4.3 on Bluetooth wonderfully. Battery life on both devices is noticeably improved on both devices as I turn off WiFi on both when doing this.

The iPad loses location services in this mode.

schweet! i just got this working!

could you clarify what you mean by this? I just brought up GPS Drive HD and it successfully does a GPS lock!

been excited about teethering my iPad for this purpose for quite some time ;-)

just to confirm, if i want to pair my ipad with my iphone 4 (via bluetooth) for tethering, i have to pay for that service through verizon correct? or do you only have to pay if you want the iphone to be a (wifi) hotspot?
