iOS 4 also addresses an issue with the Settings application in which a device connected to a hidden Wi-Fi network could incorrectly indicate that is connected to a different network.

FINALLY! This has been driving me nuts on my iPhone AND iPad.

june 2012 - steve jobs issues a press release stating they've addressed 200 security issues in iOS5, while still banning Flash because of security concerns.

tee-hee :) I'd like to buy you a cup of coffee, sir. Preferably before the HST comes into effect.

so the iPad will see a 3.2.1 or a 3.3 before it sees 4.0, right?

I would think Apple will not let iPad owners wait 3+ months for this important security update...

I'l admit to guessing, but the iPad shipped with 3.2, which was never released for the iPhone, right? Couldn't most of these security issues have been addressed in that?

iOS 4 works very well on the 3G, albeit apps like iBooks seem to run a bit slow. I haven't noticed any significant degradation anywhere else.

Not everyone had the same experience on 3G, some have a lot of issues some less/none, I don't know why.

I hope that they make an iOS 3 update for these fixes in old devices.

...is it possible that this vulnerability that have been found are iOS 4 specific due to new API and iOS 3 is virtually safe because has been tested and updated for more that a year and need no security upgrade what-so-ever?

Think about it.

lmao :D

and I tell you... it will happen as well!

I am disgusted by Apple, their policies, their greed and most of all their hypocrisy

>_<

Wow, not only the iPad I just bought is already outdated (half the memory of the iPhone 4), but it will also be abandoned by Apple in two years?

Apple's 2-3 year "YOU'RE OBSOLETE RULE" is becoming a bit annoying especially since original iPhone users paid over $500 for the item!

I know I'll be slammed for my opinion just like Apple not supporting G5's within 3 years of Snow Leopard's announcement, but I don't care.

The fanboys here will always follow Jobs down any road to buy anything.

I just buy stuff when I NEED IT and my original iPhone could use IOS 4 or at least its security fixes if not some of its features!

You can't tell me that's not technically possible. I know some things aren't, but some of these fixes should be offered to original iPhone purchasers.

It's just another case of Apple, with billions of dollars in the bank, screwing over its long-time customers.

Tick-tock... The the fanboys will now pounce. :D

While they can sort issues on their OS they can't do the same with Flash, they are not developing it, they cannot manage it.

Have you ever had an issue with Apple regarding your security and privacy?

No, your original iPhone can't use the security fix that iOS 4 got, and you know why? This is my guess: because the original iPhone doesn't have iOS 4 on it therefore doesn't have those security problems. Those issues are probably related to new API that 3.x don't have so you have nothing to fix in the first place.

Apple is strict on his OS, as they allow developer to access to some data such as access to the photo gallery via a new API they have to find their way to allow things and restrict on others, for example they would access to place and pic geolocation. Then they have to fix to avoid developers to use geolocation for malicious use. Developer don't have access on geolocation on 3.x because there isn't places for 3.x photo and there is nothing to fix.

Safari 5.0 CRASHED while watching the FLASH video of John Stewart on the GIZMODO iPhone controversy that you posted, http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-april-28-2010/appholes !

I guess Steve Jobs didn't want me to see it and exerted the full wrath of his Reality Distortion Field on me.

Too funny. Thank you Apple.

That doesn't explain why some of the features of IOS 4 won't work on an original iPhone or why it's no longer being supported in IOS 4 on any level. You just gave me a technical reason why some of IOS 4's security features are irrelevant to an original iPhone.
That STILL DOES NOT EXPLAIN the rest of it.

And I forgot to mention that I would immediately be called a "TROLL" even though I've used Apple computers since 1983!

Go figure! LOL :D

Mainly because most people have moved on at this point. The original iPhone was released January 9th 2007, in phone years it's really getting up there in the age department. That's what, three battery changes by now?

It was only released for sale in the summer of 2007, not in January. It was only announced in Jan. And the batteries in the 2G are brilliant, mine still lasts for 2 days with very high usage. Never needed to change it.

I really hope Apple will come out with a security update for the 2G as well. They do the same with the previous version of Mac OS so it's not unlikely.

I've never replaced the battery in my original iPhone bought on DAY 1!

And yes I waited in line at not 1 but 2 stores, first an ATT store, who screwed me over and the manager gave the last one to his buddy even after guaranteeing me I'd get a phone, then an Apple store, where I was treated quite better.

I think IOS 4 should be treating original iPhone customers a little better.

And the iPhone is not just a phone. I've had and trashed tons of cell phones over the years. The original iPhone should be treated with better respect considering how much Apple charged for it originally and people laughed, but yet we stood in line like lemmings.

And now IOS 4 screws us over for overpaying for the damn thing. Go figure.

You're comparing an iPhone to dumb phones from other companies that have no really security issue to anybody since it doesn't do anything other than being a phone? iPhone contains all kind of information about us and it can last far longer than any other dumb phone with its ability to extend far more than just a phone. It is still useful now even if it is 3 years old, i can see people using it for another 2-3 years. Not everybody needs the latest hardware.

The security fixes may just be an updated file to several frameworks and may be a simple update to the IOS 3. Those kind of fixes should be pushed to those devices, regardless of how old they are.

what the hell are you speaking of ? Go and try to update a Nokia SMARTPHONE from 2007. Go and try to install Windows Mobile 7 on an HTC SMARTPHONE from 2007.
You CAN'T.

They HAVE security issues and they HAVE bugs. They are supported no more.

You are just a bunch of whiners, bashing Apple for everthing ...

and your point is ?
Apple is going to fix security issues in their iOS: what's wrong with that ?

BTW I really hope Flash to be dead and buried by june 2012 ....

Stop comparing iPhone to DUMB phones, then get back to me.

Windows Mobile? puhLEASE!
They don't support it because it was a complete disaster from day 1! LOL

The fact that there are idiots out there who 2-3 years ago bought a DIFFERENT cell phone than the iPhone does not concern me whatsoever nor do I care what level of support those phones have.
The iPhone broke and changed all the rules and people have higher expectations for that reason.

I STILL think the original iPhone should be supported by Apple in IOS 4 in whatever capacity it can be. Most of them are still in service I would bet. My battery has never even been replaced!

Think about it.

No, in this case that is not possible. The document we're discussing goes over a list of changes between the new release (4.0) and the previous releases (by definition, 3.1.3 or below).

It provides a list of vulnerabilities that are known to be present in those older versions (by definition, 3.1.3 or below) for which a fix is provided in the new version (4.0).

It is prudent to operate with the understanding that any devices running version 3.1.3 always have been vulnerable to those security flaws, and furthermore, any devices that continue to run version 3.1.3 will continue to be vulnerable (unless a separate 3.x bugfix-only release comes along).

Can I download this WITHOUT iAd? ... NO! OK, then my 2G Touch will forever be stuck with iOS 3.
But you can opt-out of the data collection activities in iAd which could be used to identify your device and present targeted advertising.

Which would leave you with just about the same situation using iAd-sponsored applications as you already have when using non-analytics based AdMob-sponsored applications.

But note that with OS X, Apple always releases all updates at the same time. If they update Snow Leopard, a security update for Leopard comes out at the same moment. Same goes for every previous version of OS X.

The fact that they released iOS 4 without any security update for original iPhones is frightening.

Now it is possible that either 1. they do it differently with iPhone than OS X or 2. that they rushed to get iOS 4 out and will get 3.1.4 out as soon as they can. Maybe. But it breaks every precedent they have set... or they have declared the original $600 iPhone worse than a piece of garbage: something that they have now told every hacker how to exploit in a lot of different ways.

There is some precedent for releasing a bugfix release for version N.x after the release of version (N+1) in an iOS based device.

Four days after Apple released iPoone OS 2.0, they also a new bugfix-only version of 1.1.5 for iPod touch users who didn't purchase 2.0.

I think this is SCARY that Apple has OFFICIALLY abandoned ORIGINAL iPhone owners who paid over $500 and Steve Jobs should be just as ashamed as when he disowned his own CHILD!

No security fixes for original $500+ iPhones anymore? Ridiculous.

Call me a troll, I don't care.
I've owned Apple computers since before HALF of you fanboys and even moderators here were BORN!

SAFARI 5.0 immediately CRASHED just after posting my last comment! LOL

Of course I reported it to Apple but...

Is Steve Jobs' remotely attacking me with his infamous Reality Distortion Field? :D
