iOS 4 and iPhone 3G: Worst combination ever.

Most people I talked to had problems when upgrading to iOS4 on a 3G. Try doing a restore and starting fresh with iOS4 (no backup restores).

Some people say starting fresh is a pain, but I started fresh on my iPhone4 and it took maybe an hour or 2 to get everything to where I wanted in terms of settings. I lost text messages and game saves, but do you really need all of those?

Yeah, this is exactly the problem. For some reason the transition from 3.0 to 4.0 on a 3G doesn't work out so well. A friend complained about the slowness and I recommended he try not restoring from backup and bingo, it was totally usable.

Add mine to the list, my 3G after ios4 takes seconds to do any task after clicking on the icon. When I received my 4, I reset the 3G back to factory with ios4, you can count the seconds before anything opens. So far my wife does not mind, but I get very impatient when I use her phone.

Did anyone respond with the answer of whether you can downgrade back to 3.x? This thing is driving me crazy.

Why is iOS 4 the worst possible thing I could have done to my iPhone? I went from having a quick, cool and slick iPhone 3G to a slow, buggy and annoying one.

It takes me 10 seconds to load text messages and I miss calls because when people call and I slide the slider, it takes a few seconds to register. Apps frequently crash, and if they don't crash they run incredibly slow. I was listening to a song on the radio and tried to use the app Shazam to figure out what it was, and the song was literally on for a minute but Shazam was too slow to record the 10-second clip it needs. Thus, I hate my iPhone 3G now.

Is there anything I can do to speed up my iPhone? Or if I were to downgrade (if this is even possible) can I keep all my texts and stuff?

Did you do a restore from backup or clean install?

It shouldn't matter. I shouldn't have to jump through hoops. They should optimize the install process and optimize the OS to work with the "old" phones. Otherwise, say goodbye to "it just works." The 3G was just released 2 years ago. It's ridiculous to expect people to buy a new $300 phone every 2 years.

After using iOS 4 for about a week now, I've noticed that every aspect of my phone's performance has suffered, including the battery life. In addition to everything on the phone lagging and running slower, normal usage seems to chew up the battery about 50% faster. And I'll bet my life that you'll NEVER see an official response from Apple. Nope -- buy a new phone, sucker. It's pretty sad how Jobs used to rail against MS for having "no taste," and now Apple has a mega-corporation attitude that's just as bad, if not worse. I'd argue that MS's response to issues is better than Apple's anymore.

A simple hard shutdown and restart of the iPhone should solve most(?) of these problems. Did the trick for me. Hold the top button and the home button down together. Prompt will appear to shut down, slide the slider. iPhone turns off. Push the top button again, iPhone restarts -> iOS4 is much faster.

(I am using an iPod touch 2g, but the hardware is the same I believe).

No, it doesn't. Not even close. I've had to turn mine off several times and it has never been any better when turning it back on. Had to turn it off because it wouldn't respond to anything else.

Ditto, I have completely shutdown a couple times, and it appears to be getting worse everyday. At first my slider didn't lag, now I get a phone call and there is a 5 second delay between sliding and the phone screen comibg up.

I guess i could except that my phone is old, but then why put the upgrade there for 3G users. Apple is all about controlling the quality od the user experience when it suits their agenda and other times it appears to not matter all all.

I was having similar issues, but a restore to factory settings and setting it up as a new phone has done wonders! It now seems much snappier and more responsive under iOS 4.

I took mine to the Apple store complaining how bad iOS 4 is on 3G. They gave me a brand new 3G (prolly refurb) with the regular 3.1.3 software on it. I was under warranty.

I remember the firestorm of bitching when people first thought you couldn't put 4 on a 3G.

There was a firestorm of bitching that flash wasn't going to ever be on the iphone/ipad. I didn't see apple bending to anyones will. The reasons were that apple wants a consistant and bug free user experience, which is fine. They also removed ALOT of functionality from OS 4 when running o nthe 3G. If after removing all the functionality it still is buggy and slow. Then why didn't they just say, hey sorry, 3GS and higher only.

This has been Apples arguement for everything on these devices. When iTunes says there is an update for my phones firmware, I have an expectation that it's a good one from Apple, not a "here give it a shot" update.
