Why do you need to save the blobs? ..what the hell are blobs anyway? Sounds like a womans monthlies..
So, apple release 5.1 - what difference will that make? Surely you just wouldnt upgrade to that if you have a JB iPhone until the new JB version is available?
Are these 'blobs' so that when you do upgrade to the new JB 5.1 you can download all your tweeks etc in one go?

Correct if Apple releases 5.1 just don't upgrade till there's a JB for it.
Blobs are so you can downgrade to a previous iOS version after Apple has stopped signing it. You can't do it on the 4S( or is it withing iOS 5?) so saving the blobs is just in case they find a way to downgrade. So if Apple releases 5.1 and you for whatever reason needed to restore your phone then you need those blobs for 5.0 or 5.0.1 so you can restore to them until a JB is available for 5.1. This of course won't work until they find a way. If they find a way.
I read that there should be more updates to Siri in 5.1, including hardware control via Siri; "turn off bluetooth", "turn off wifi". Sounds like a step in a great direction.

And the whole point of this thread is not to update to 5.1, but to save your blobs in case at some point in the future, we can role back to 5.0.1 for jailbreaking purposes.
In case your phone takes a chit and you are "forced" to restore it thru itunes to get it working again, (when you restore, apple automatically updates to their newest firmware, you have no choice, then ur "perfection" will be gone).

There's multiple rumors that Apple is announcing the next-gen iPad the first week of March. It will most likely ship with 5.1, so the new OS version will be part of the iPad presser.
I don't have a real source, but I'm sure everyone's aware of the rumors and the timeline.

I can renew my contract and get an iPhone 4s March 14th. But I'm afraid by that time iOS 5.1 will be out and thus be unjailbreakable(need it for tethering cuz provider doesn't allow it without additional fees).
What's a good estimate of how quickly the new iOS 5.1 software will be pre-installed on phones? Am I safe or should I see if there's still a way to renew my contract earlier?

Hopefully they figure out how to get the 4s to be able to restore and rejailbreak once 5.1 is out.
I've had to restore once or twice and it would suck to lose the JB because I need to restore. Especially because dev-teams are certainly going to wait to the ipad3/iphone 5 to jb again.

True I hope so too. But this would only help people who've already jailbroken and saved their blobs, not people who get new phones with iOS 5.1 preinstalled.
yeah, anyone who gets a phone preinstalled 5.1 is probably 100% out of luck for a JB for 8 months or so

And if I'm ever forced to 5.1 due to a repair or new phone I won't make it an iPhone. Next iOS device I buy will require a jailbreak before I shell out th cash
