not really an acceptable answer. No matter how you cut it Apple screwed up big time. There should be no need for the phone to connect back to Apple to get out of recovering mode. Apple at the very least should bulk up their servers for this or get the recovering server separated from the download ones.

Fail answer.

Report from England was major ISP had to choke their service due to the download stampede for iOS 5 (it happened at exact same time as iOS launch according to the company).

When Jobs died Twitter reported its servers where overloaded.

This is just too big.

No, you don't understand the problem.

Of course you need an internet connection to download the update. The issue here is that it needs to connect again DURING the update and if it fails it can leave the device in an unusable state. Making matters worse was an install procedure that backed up the device before trying to make that connection, then if it failed and the user tried again it had to do the whole backup again.

Slow download, not much Apple can do about it. Having updated devices not work if there's no connection in the middle of an install? That's just dumb and begging for problems.

Ah, it's that part of process.

I agree, iTunes is troublesome.

Mine actually bricked. I told it to go ahead and update, plugged it in, left it alone and heard an odd beep at one point during the night. When I attempted to turn it on in the morning, I had a black screen of death. I've tried restoring, I've tried restoring from DFU mode. I took it into the Apple store and they said the screen had just "happened" to go out, and my $800~ dollar item that was brand new less than a year and a half ago would cost $340 to fix. The genius suggested I wait until Friday and just buy a new one.

Just over a year, it was a Christmas present last Christmas. Since when I plug it into my Vuzix Wrap I get a blue screen there, I really don't think changing out the entire screen will do much. :(

Good news, everyone! My black screen was a combination of Screen Curtain and a need for a "tech support tap"!
