Still no self-timer? How come?
Well, as Jared52 suggested, if you could use a bluetooth headset as a remote trigger, that would be the best solution:)

Well, if there were a self timer on the iPhone, I would NEVER use it unless I'm all by myself in my own room. Why risk having your $650 - $850 piece of equipment taken by a passerby just because you wanted an automatic picture?

no quick access on iPad2

on iPad2 when I press the home button twice on a locked screen, no camera icon appears.
instead music controls (play, skip forward, backward, volume) appears

are there any settings for activating this feature?

Ha! That remote trigger thing is great!

Not sure how I'd use it though.

Dunno about that?! That would imply that self timers should only be on really cheapo point & shoots? My D7000 has various timers and remote shooting and it's worth plenty more than an iPhone!

If you wanted to make sure that there is absolutely no camera shake, then the timer is a good idea.

So, is the volume button API public now? It's not fair to 3rd party camera apps if it isn't public.

But it's no different that any other feature; Apple gets access to all APIs and can bypass them if it wants, devs only get to use the public ones.

Lock Screen, Remote Triggering

It may not allow access to anything requiring the sim card, but it certainly allows access to everything self-contained, like contacts, photos, reminders, SETTINGS! You name it.

It's a potentially serious bug

Not if you'd normally have to enter your passcode. Try it. In other words, you went to the camera between screen sleep, and iPhone lock. You wouldn't have had to enter your passcode to access your phone. So... it should let you go to your photos, but it doesn't. Probably a bug. But it doesn't allow access to a locked phone.

Same on a ipod touch 4G. I think that it is another "only iPhone" non sense feature.

I just tried with Instagram, it does not take use of the volume button.

I guess it's fair enough that Apple wants to have this feature exclusively at first. This way they can tweak the API until they are really sure that it works and then release it.

Nevertheless I don't this is a particularly complicated API to make public. I understand that some more complicated API like dictionary or Siri may take a while to mature before releasing it. I don't think that's the case in here.

The feature isn't exclusive to Apple's Camera app. It's part of the API now. If the developer uses the standard UIImagePickerController, the volume button takes a photo.

Some apps like "ShakeItPhoto" now also have volume button support under iOS 5, but I'd guess it just got the feature "automatically" since it's using an unmodified UIImagePickerController.

I'm not sure how Instagram was built, but it may not be using the standard UIImagePickerController.

Isn't taking pictures supported by Siri?

So why isn't this implemented on the iPad 2? Just that difference is causing a lot of confusion.

Not that it matters much since the iPad camera is so lousy.

Everytime I use the camera from the unlock screen then press the home button it takes me into my phone without requiring the password. Is there a way to fix this?

Not sure if this has been discovered yet, but when you swipe right from the camera app after launching it from the lock screen, you also get the "phone is locked" message.

This rocks!

Thank you for this post and clear instructions. I've been searching through the settings tab on my iphone 4 running iOS 5 without success. I appreciate your posts!
