Wait, so if I choose to backup to iCloud it doesn't backup to iTunes any more?

I want to import my settings and app data to a clean iOS5 install and continue to sync with iTunes. Have I greatly misunderstood how the process works?

My plan was to:

1. backup to iTunes
2. update to iOS5
3. backup to to iCloud
4. restore as new device
5. sync app data, etc from iCloud
6. continue to use iTunes rather than iCloud

Can anyone tell me if I've misunderstood how it all works? All I want to do it set up my device as new and be able to keep my app data

Yea I'm a little confused about this process as well. I don't quite understand how it is possible to restore as a new device yet sync old data? It seems counterintuitive doesn't it?

I would like to set up as a new device, but I am weary about losing contacts, etc. Can anyone explain how to do this as simply and detailed as possible? Thanks.

Time to download

Ive read and read and read but cant seem to find(PLEASE HELP)
Does anyone know the actual file size of the ios 5 update? im downloading the cdma ios version 4.2.10 now and that is 652mb. and i heard its just a patch to 4.2.8 so if a patch is almost 700mb and ios 5 is a complete software update i imagine it will be huge! and since i only have 1-3mb internet at home im just wondering if im gonna be at Starbucks all day.

It wouldn't really be old data though. It's like installing OSX or Windows from scratch and then adding your files to it, rather than migrating your old system across. At least that's how I see it.

So if I set it up as a new phone when prompted how will I then restore from a backup in iTunes in order to get my contacts , calendar notes back onto my iPhone ?

Size of iOS 5

The software is 774.4 MB. You don't have to install it as a new phone. You can just take the regular update route, and let iTunes work its magic. The whole process took me about 35-40 mins (after the download completed).
