Hi,

I was just wondering whether it is known whether iOS5 will be fully compatible with the iPhone4 given that it seems as if it will be released before the Iphone5?

Thanks

Judging by the way Apple supports and puts out firmware updates for a phone for over 2 years past its release day I dont think Apple will stop support for the iphone 4.
The iphone 3G was released in July of 2008 and got its last update in November 2010.

They just now stopped support for the 3GS (with iOS 4.3), so I'd say the iPhone 4 is safe for a couple years yet.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8G4 Safari/6533.18.5)

Yea we will be safe!

No, it's not going to be supported because IOS 5 will require the majiggy that the iPhone 4 doesn't have, but the iPhone 5 will.

How are we supposed to know? really?

Might as well use a Magic 8-ball:

So why would they realise iOS 5 before the Iphone 5 if it didn't work with any of the previous models? and to be honest as one of the leading mac forums i thought that it would be a better bet than a magic 8 ball.

I hope that the iPhone 4 will get most of the overhaul that they are talking about though.

PS. The magic 8 ball agrees with everyone else

I'm pretty sure it will. The iPhone 4 was JUST released to Verizon, and it's unlikely they'll phase it out so quickly. I'm hoping they learn from the whole 3G/iOS4 mishap and ensure it runs smoothly, which I think they will.

YES, YES, and......... YES!!!!

It is fully compatible and very cool!!! Couldn't wait for the i5 to come out so I "DL'd" ios 5b4 and installed it onto my i4. It has a ton of cool stuff going on. The message center is really cool, the GUI is better, finally has the "built in" ability to remove 1 entry from your call log history, alerts are better, reminders is very useful and a ton more functionality. Can't wait fr the i5 to hit so I can scoop one up. :):)

I'm sure it will be supported. Not to mention like other poster said it was demoed on the 4. The 4 has enough horsepower to get updates likely at least til iOS 6 rolls out, maybe beyond. What's funny is I have the thunderbolt and atrix, an my iPhone 4, with less ram than both, and a slower clock speed runs about as fast as atrix, and a fast, or faster than the bolt. Apple got it right with the 4, with exception of the antenna issue( I habent had any, likely att service doesn't help) and the occasional home button. I'm running 5b4 on my iPhone and it runs great. They did a good job so far

Yep, long day...

'spose I was thinking that you probably just don't want to update a 3GS beyond 4.3...

From everything I heard/read, iOS 5 runs great on the 3GS. I think Apple learned their lesson with putting iOS 4 on the 3G (as the 3G hardware is too slow).

In my personal opinion, it will not support iOS5. Because iOS5 requires certain things that are not supported with the Iphone 4. However, I think we can not be sure about that until an official announcement by apple.

I don't think it will be fully compatible, but everything announced now you will get. Here are some examples of differences:

iPhone OS 3 - 3GS got voice control while 3G did not

iOS 4 - 4 got FaceTime while 3GS did not. But also the ip 4 got more alert tones (4.2 or 4.3) while the 3GS did not

Some differences will be mechanical (like if the next iPhone has an alert light), but they will probably not release some future features for the iP 4.

Are you serious? You're telling me that Apple's current flagship phone (iPhone 4) will not support iOS 5? Every iPhone has been able to upgrade to a newer iOS than it shipped with.

Not to mention Apple demoed iOS 5 on an iPhone 4. Not to mention all the developers are using iPhone 4s and 3GSs.

Also, Apple has already officially announced it.

at this point I kinda think iOS 5 will be sitting ready for release while we wait on the iPhone 5. iOS 5 GM will probably be out by the end of August.

Yea I'm not sure what the OP is thinking.
