It seems to have gone widely ignored but with iOS 5 being released soon, what improvements will be coming to tv?

We already know of iOS display mirroring but apart from that, not much has been reported or speculated.

What are your realistic expectations for iOS 5 on tv?

Don't see them as related hence would expect nothing. Theres a reason people are ignoring it.

They are related. iOS5 will be running on AppleTV. Changes and new features are inevitable in a new OS. What they are, we only know one (display mirroring).

This is indeed the missing link to replace tractional television. If Google and Apple hadn't gone at each others throats, we would no doubt have seen this already via YouTube.

News and sports make up the majority of live content. The NBA, NFL and MLB apps built into AppleTV are the way forward (we still need NHL!). An introduction of a CNN and other all news networks would complete it. I wouldn't mind paying a few bucks a month for a CNN feed.

My bad if it's not there. In Canada we only get the MLB app, not the NBA app. I thought there was also an NFL app. So both NFL and NHL are missing in that case. Still, the existing sports apps are rendered useless because you can't watch your own team's games in your territory. I'm in Toronto and Jays games are blocked out in all of Canada.

This clearly needs to change but at least they're heading in the right direction by releasing apps for each sport.

An issue I just noticed now is how the Radio app is nearly impossible to use because there's no favourites menu. If you know a radio station you like, you have to sift through thousands of stations every time you want to listen to it. God help you if your station starts with the letter Z.

I'd really like to see some improvements to the radio streaming functionality on the Apple TV. With it as terrible as it is currently, I use an iPhone app (TuneIn, if anyone's interested) and then airplay the stream to the ATV. It works well enough, as the interface for the radio app is far more up to the task than what's on the ATV2, but it's a bit long-winded.

I'd like to see some things that are less USA centric. BBC iPlayer, 4oD, ITVPlayer etc. Particularly now movies and TV shows have been rolled out in a load more countries.

Also the option to remove things we don't want (like MLB).

    It has a favorites feature...

Pick a radio stream, then hold the select button down and the context menu will come up. One of the options is "Add to Favorites". It will then show that station at the top of the main Radio station list...

Here's one....I'd just like the device to work. Maybe some BUG FIXES! No more of this losing the home share issues.

Thanks! So much for intuitive UI, but it's great that it's there :)

I used to use Podcasts a lot more when it had its own menu. The "Internet" menu is going to get very long if they just keep adding to it. It's about time that Apple just treat them as Apps, even if they continue to develop their own.

This is iOS so an iOS like grid of icons below the existing context thumbnails bar would work well. You'd have three rows. Context thumbnails, a row of icons and below it a Dock.

Select an app and its content would show above. For example, select the Movies icon and top movies // currently rented would show above or select the MLB app and scores for the latest gams appear above. Now you can either use that quick thumbnail menu at the top to pick a movie (or a game) or click on the icon and be taken to the movies menu.

Have individual app icons for TV Shows, Netflix, Flickr, YouTube, Podcasts, Radio, NBA etc. Hold click on an icon to rearrange their position. Hold again to hide the icon (still accessible in the settings). Put your most used apps in the Dock for quick access (i.e. Movies | TV Shows | Podcasts | Radio)

I do not see why airplay mirroring is so exciting, why tie up two devices showing the same thing. Time and effort should be spent to make AirPlay send both audio and video to the ATV while allowing you to use the iPhone or iPad to do other stuff.

As for what might be announced (or just quietly updated) tomorrow, I think that we'll see the AppleTV's iOS5 reflect the recent drop of TV show rentals and revert to the model of buying TV shows, movies and music from your couch.

Even though there is no real storage on AppleTV2, with iCloud, buying a show means that youve purchased the rights to it and can download it for viewing at your convenience. The new AppleTV menus may well reflect this, showing your purchases and allowing you to select one to view. When clicked, it begins to download and you'll be able to start watching almost immediately, just like rentals work today. No onboard storage needed beyond the streaming buffer.

This might happen for music also. I'd like to see the music menu return to AppleTV as it was a much used function of the device.

This already happens. I get a whole tv series that I subscribe to. All I have to do is go to the purchases tab and I can stream it all I want, the moment it's released to iTunes it's there. If I buy a tv show on my iPhone it's available the same way almost immediately.

I agree with the store for tv shows. I also hope for Hulu, or that rumored Apple Netflixish service.

It seems that Apple is quietly unveiling some iOS5 for tv features. 4 way split screen for iOS devices is essentially making tv a gaming console.

From what I gathered at the presentation however, is that it appears that AirPlay mirroring is only going to work with the iPhone 4S and iPad2.
