I originally posted this in the normal iPad forum, but one user suggested I might have luck posting it here. My iPad was not jailbroken or hacked in any way (besides being used as a development device with XCode), but perhaps some of the methods used by you guys would come in handy.

I tried updating my iPad 1 to iOS 5 the other day. The OS refused to install normally, so I put the iPad into recovery mode and tried to install. Huge mistake: my iPad 1 is now stuck in recovery mode.

Any attempt to restore the iPad results in the message "The ipad could not be restored. An unknown error has occured (1)." The Apple "geniuses" tried to fix this problem, couldn't, and told me it would cost $369 to repair since I'm out of warrantee. For the price of the repair I could practically buy a refurbished one. But I don't think they tried anything that I hadn't tried already (just using iTunes to restore the device), so I'm not willing to say that all hope is lost yet.

What could I try to get the device out of recovery mode to any version of iOS? At this point I am willing to try both sanctioned and unsanctioned methods.

Have you tried downloading Tiny Umbrella and kicking it out of recovery using TU? That's worked for me in the past, even when I wasn't jail broken.

Have you tried downloading Tiny Umbrella and kicking it out of recovery using TU? That's worked for me in the past, even when I wasn't jail broken.

Tried Tiny Umbrella just now. Used "Exit Recovery" button. That caused iPad to go into a loop. It would show the apple logo, then show a progress bar (which makes no progress) momentarily, then the spinning activity indicator for a minute, blank screen briefly, then back to the apple logo (ad infinitum it seems). I'll refer to this loop as "the loop."

Next I tried putting the device in DFU mode and using TU's "fix recovery" button. This caused the iPad to boot to a white screen, then show a split screen with white on top and a black console on bottom. The console says:

"Unable to find fs_mount"
"Unable to find fs_unmount"
"Unable to find fs_load_file"
Greenpoison initialized"

It sits there doing nothing.

If I try restoring using iTunes at this point it tells me "The iPad "iPad" could not be restored. This device isn't eligible for the requested build." Then the iPad goes back into the loop. I figured this might be because TU messes with the Mac's hosts file. So next I tried using TU's "fix recovery again" but this time unchecking "Set Hosts to Cydia on Exit" and exiting TU before restoring from iTunes.

This time iTunes began the restore, and the console on the iPad began to fill up quickly. Unfortunately after a few seconds iTunes popped an error message stating "The iPad "iPad" could not be restored. The device cannot be found."

The last few lines in the console on the iPad are:
yaFTL::YAFTL_Open(l:3008): CXT is not valid. Performing full NAND R/O restore ...
[FTL:MSG] FTL_Open
AppleBCMWLAN:handleIOKitBusyWatchdogTimeout(): Error, no successful firmware download after 6000 ms!! Giving up...

There didn't appear to be any visible error messages in the iPad's console before this point.

After restarting it's back in the loop again. Out of ideas again.

Try with redsn0w:

Under "Extras", try
1. Just Boot
2. Recovery Fix
3. If that still doesn't work, Pwned DFU and try restoring in iTunes.

If none of those works, you might have to build a custom ipsw and jailbreak.

($369 to repair?? now that's pure theft )

After many hours and dozens of procedures THIS WORKED.

If none of those works, you might have to build a custom ipsw and jailbreak.

1. Okay tried "Just Boot". After redsn0w went through some steps, and the iPad booted with a pineapple logo, the iPad went back into the loop I described before. In other words, no luck.

2. Okay tried "Recovery Fix". To do this I went back into iTunes with the device in DFU mode. I then did a restore in iTunes. iTunes did "Extracting Software", "Verifying With Apple", "Preparing iPad for restore", iPad booted with Apple logo, showed progress bar, "Waiting for iPad", "Restoring iPad software ..." (progress bar moves on iPad), "Verifying iPad software...", "Restoring iPad firmware...", iPad's progress bar is 3/4's done at this point, iTunes pops up "The iPad "iPad" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1)." The iPad now appears to be in restore mode, showing the iTunes logo and USB cable graphic. I now open redsn0w and hit "Recovery Fix". iPad boots with white flash. "patching files", "waiting for reboot", "uploading ram disk", "done", console appears, lots of lines streaming down, running pineapple, rebooting, apple logo.

HOLY GOD IT WORKED. IT WORKED. I LOVE YOU! My iPad booted to iOS 5!!!!!!!

My device was not hacked or jailbroken, and Apple was totally unable to fix it, but the jailbreakers could. Apple zero, jailbreakers one! You just saved me $369!

Wow :p

I'm glad I could help. (I'm not even a seasoned JB-er actually, I just had to deal with that stuff accidentally).

Sorry for being a little over the top, but I've been trying to fix this thing since 7:30pm and it's now 2:53am. I was really starting to think the device was a goner!

This is both a happy and sad story. Truth is Apple wasn't "unable" to fix it, just unwilling to help. That puts a frowny face on me when it was apparently an easy DIY fix. $369 is nutty. But I'm happy you were able to find a fix and it's one of the reason these forums and "the crazy ones" jailbreakers serve such an important role in the Apple "community." It's OK to be a fanboy but, just like anything in life, opposition is needed to keep things honest, or at least more honest.
