I need to find the original Calypso tone that was awesome before they shortened it to like two beeps.

Just did this with the instructions on the first post. Worked perfect. The process works for ringtones or text tones, and you can use "ringtones" as tones anywhere, and apply to specific people.

Perfect. The way it should have been all along.

I'm having trouble doing this. The two tones I've put into Ringtones are greyed out when I drag them into Ringtones on my iPhone. Any ideas anyone?

I'm surprised Apple hasn't made this more publicized. People have been begging for this forever.

Isn't that a sad thing that people have to --beg-- for a simple feature that ALL other phone platforms have had built in since the very beginning?

I spoke too soon. I am able to set my short custom ringtone as a text tone, but when I actually receive a message the phone makes no sound.

Figures, too good to be true. Anyone else have this problem? Is there a different format Alert Tones are supposed to be than .m4r like ringtones?

I'm really glad Apple has finally allowed this. I set up a few text tones using GarageBand and it works perfectly. Actually, any m4r file in the ringtone playlist can be used as a text tone. But as the OP suggested, anything longer than about 5 seconds would get annoying.

Welcome to the 21st century Apple is what I have to say to this.

Yeah, these are the kind of things that baffle me. Oh well... Glad they finally made the change, if for no other reason than I'm tired of hearing the same &%#@ing text message tone all day, every day from people around me. :)

I'm switching over from an original Droid and I've been making tons of tones from random soundboards (Portal, TF2, etc) in the Android market.

After following all the steps, I have 3 seconds of an AAC tune converted to m4r on my Desktop. When I double-clicked it, my iTunes (10.4) now has a folder entitled Ringtones. However, when I select that folder, it is empty.

So I Deleted the song I created as the AAC from iTunes and selected Keep File. After double-clicking the title which I had shortened, now it appears in the Ringtones folder. Evidently the change in the title didn't affect how it was seen by iTunes.

Creating ringtones is much simpler with my Sensation 4G. :p

I bought a tone from iTunes and it is doing the same thing, it does not play when a text comes in! Anyone else have this issue?

It's good to know its not just custom tones, because I'm inclined to believe they'll fix this if tones people are paying for from iTunes are doing this too. Thanks for the info makes me feel better knowing someone else has that problem.

Don't see "Create AAC"

When I right click, I see "Create AIFF", not AAC. Will that work to create a text alert? If not, what should I do?

One less reason to Jailbreak

This was one of the reasons I jailbroke my iPhone. If Apple carries on like this I think less and less people will consider Jailbreaking.

The next big one has to be a major update of Folders. The icon is horrible (especially a whole screen of them) and the capacity limit is ridiculous. 12 isn't it? I use 'Categories' which does the trick but is awkward to use. Designing my own icons was fun but time consuming so I hope Apple sorts this out soon.

Text tones in the cloud?

I bought a text tone on my iPhone 4 (a jawa yelling" uhtinni") and then couldn't find it in iTunes on my iPad 2 but when I went to buy it again I got a "previous purchase" warning. So do I have to buy it again on my iPad or not?

Spotted this one right away :D

These are the instructions I sent to my mates yesterday:

Tested the custom text tones facility on iOS5. Works a treat with iRinger. Go to http://www.iringer.net/ to get the latest version, import the file you want as a tone, export it as a text tone (CAF) then tick export to iTunes, click go, go to iTunes and drag the alert tone (from ringtones) onto your phone. On the phone go to settings > sounds > text tone > pick your new tone and tada! What's even better is that now if you look at your contacts and edit there is a custom field for text tone so you know who text you just from the alert :)
Yep, iRinger is definitely the way to go. It can be used with almost any audio source, be it an audio or video file.
Pick any part of the audio you want, add fade ins and outs, and it can even save the file direct into iTunes.

Original Calypso from iOS 4.2

Hi Everyone, If anyone would like the Original Calypso tone from iOS 4.2 (the long Version) then I have put it here... mediafire.com/?xd761kg89c6t8jd If anyone has any difficulties with the download then get in touch with me. The file has been saved as a .m4r file so if you have iTunes 10.5 and iOS 5 then just double click file and it will be put in the ringtones playlist by iTunes..
