OP: First off, do not listen to these ignorant people who will tell you to upgrade. I am glad you are still on iOS 6. That reflects that people are still using it and not upgrading to the crap that iOS 8 is. I bet you anything your iPhone 5 performs better than the iPhone 6/6+ in terms of fluidity. Your iPhone 5 will also get the best battery life on iOS 6.1.4. DO NOT UPGRADE IT. Your battery usage will go drastically down. iOS 8, yet alone 8.4 performs like crap on the iPhone 5. It's laggy and animations stutter almost all the time.

Keep your phone on 6.1.4 for as long as you can. You will gain nothing by upgrading it, except a childish inspired OS full of horrible whites and abysmal icons. It will make your phone worse. Btw, your battery usage looks great.

I wouldn't necessarily say thats true. My iPhone 5 is on iOS 8.4 and it performs very well. While iOS 8 is a pretty terrible OS, the 5 definitely handles it pretty well, with very minimal slow downs from iOS 7. The only time it really lags is when you first unlock it after turning it off. The OS that is right for an iPhone 5 all depends on what you like. iOS 8 is a great OS, but I understand people not liking the iOS 7 and above 'Look', but that doesn't make it a terrible operating system.

Nobody is ignorant here. In security terms its a terrible idea to run iOS 6.1.4, and also in terms of app compatibility. If iOS 6.1.4 is what works for the OP, so be it, but nobody is ignorant for suggesting upgrades.

Maybe my expectations were too high for the iPhone 5. But I guess this isn't too bad...

That battery life is really decent enough, OP. Like the others, I highly recommend NOT upgrading your software ever, and stay on 6.1.4 for as long as possible.

Btw, can you also post screenshots of your homescreen, lockscreen as well as some of the apps you still use daily on your phone? It's been a while since I saw a iOS 6 device, so looking at any images of it would be like time travelling back to the good o' times.

I'm one of the few people who would rather Scott Forstall back at the helm of iOS software development. But oh well..

While I agree with the general sentiment and like iOS 6 (and before) myself, depending on the person and their use there can be plenty of things that can be gained from upgrading, although they would come at some cost. That's basically what needs to be considered. iOS 8 is definitely not as snappy on a phone like iPhone 5 or really any phone, but iPhone 5 runs it fine (it's no iOS 7 on iPhone 4 or iOS 8 on iPhone 4S where the experience is truly bad in general). So, again, while iOS 6 is nice and strong consideration needs to be put into staying with it, it doesn't mean that iOS 8 is just horrific and doesn't bring something that can be useful for someone assuming the downsides are given consideration.

Sure.

I'd say still above average (if not even well above average).

How's this?

For my usage, iOS 6's app compatibility is, up to now, enough. If I could put iOS 6 on my iPhone 5s, I wouldn't doubt a split second. I'd, for sure, keep iOS 6. I still have it on my iPod Touch 5G bought in December 2012, if I ever upgrade (If iPod Touch 7G comes, not 6G, it adds nothing for me.) I won't sell the 5G. That iPod is staying in iOS 6 until it dies.
In the end, keep iOS 6, that is Apple-like quality.
Battery looks good enough according to iPhone 5 battery screenshots I've seen.

Wow those screen caps took me back in time...I'm still using my iPhone 5 and I remember getting 6 and 7 hours of usage on iOS 6 so those #'s are correct, I also loved the music player too. The worse move I ever made was upgrading to iOS 7 and then 8 on my iPhone 5 because battery has never been the same as when I was on iOS 6. I had my battery replaced under the recall by an Apple store (still using that replaced battery) that was about a year ago and I'm noticing the battery drain again. I think the iPhone 5 worked the best on iOS 6.

I recently upgraded to the iOS9 beta 4 using the low battery power has helped and I'm seeing 3.5 and 4 hrs or usage on my iPhone 5. I just think my battery might need to be replaced again but I'm on the fence should I go with the iPhone 6s this fall or just get a new battery and keep my iPhone 5. Let's see $80.00 for new battery keep the 5 or shell out lots more money for 6s? Not sure.

Install the iOS 9 Beta, it has a power saving mode which will allow for better battery. Nobody likes someone who is stuck in 2012.

And go to a buggy beta software? I have iOS 9 PB on my old iPad mini 2 (got the air 2 now) and the battery life sucks. It's just an all around bad experience. Wouldn't recommend it for a daily driver.

OP, don't settle. It's very rare to have an iPhone 5 still on iOS 6. Keep it that way ;)

I would recommend upgrading. There will eventually come a time when you will replace your phone or you will be forced to upgrade your current one.

I also generally like the new iOS, however, I agree that there is too much white. Android and WP are also flat and they're not nearly as white as iOS 7/8/9 is.

If I were to upgrade, it would be to iOS 7.1.2., as that was probably the most stable version of recent iOS updates.
