I just noticed that my flash doesn't come on anymore to focus the picture in low light situations. When you take the picture the flash works fine. However, the picture is blurring because it is too dark for the camera to focus before snapping the picture. I may be wrong but I remember that in iOS 5 you would tap the screen to focus and if it was too dark the light would come on so you could focus the picture, then go off and flash bright when you snap the photo. I've tried both the auto and the on settings with no luck.

Has anyone else noticed this?

My 4S has never behaved the way you described (still on iOS 5.1.1 here). It never used the flash for AF assist.

It does do a pre-flash when you hit the shutter and the flash is on. That's to help with proper exposure and color balance before the full power flash fires to take the picture.
