Problem easily fixed

Here's the print screen of the box.

Many thanks to nicnuc2 and everyone else who has posted here.

I had this problem too and solved it very easily using nicnuc2's posts (posts #7 & #8). All I did was plug my iPhone into my computer. After a minute or so the pop-up box that nicnuc2 included a screenshot of in post #8 came up and I clicked on the first option, as highlighted in post #8 ('Import pictures & videos using Windows'). My lost photos were then transferred to my computer.

I'm guessing that the photos folder in iOS6 only displays photos taken while using iOS6 - all other photos are still there but are hidden. So, panic over. If you do the above it will transfer all photos to your computer, regardless of whether taken while using iOS5 or iOS6.

There was no need for me to buy iExplorer.

To anyone reading this, may I suggest that you then backup your computer and check that the photos are in the backup to avoid reliving the experience should your laptop die etc. My computer imports the photos from my iPhone into C/Users/[the name on the icon that you click on to log on to your computer].

Hello, I have a similar problem.
I synced my iPhone 4s two days before updating. All the photos, messages etc that I got or took after that day weren't in the backup. It does make sense but I had no idea it would be like that. I started downloading the update from my iPhone until it asked me to plug it into iTunes(Recovery Mode). I need to know if I should keep my hopes up or just give up. Thanks.

Are you sure he has no backup? What OS was he using before he updated? Chances are iTunes or iCloud will have backed up fairly recently.

I don't think the 'other' data will be your photos but I can't be certain.

iPhone will sync the data everytime if you open the iCloud and iTunes, so it may still be in your iTunes and iCloud. If you can not find the lost data, you need some third part apps to check the iPhone inner, and recover the lost data from iPhone.

The iOS devices do not have a saved history of what was on the device. Once you erase something, unless it was saved to a system like PhotoStream or imported to a computer, then there is no where to pull those pictures from to put them back on the device.
