Does it matter if it's illegal? To you I mean. You're still sleeping at night right? Speeding's illegal, streaming TV shows is illegal, smoking pot's illegal, not declaring tips is illegal.. have you never done any of these things? Unless you're a cop, I wouldn't worry so much about it. Morally, he's not hurting anyone.

And no, using iOS Betas without a developer account is not illegal. Frowned upon is a better phrase.

I think if there is a poster here who hasn't done all of those things, he or she should be slapped in the face for not living life.

I love how everyone is so quick to condemn a Non-Dev iOS 6 beta user when they themselves probably pirate their entire music collection.

If someone wants to go about using an iOS beta the "non-proper" way, let them do what they want. If they enjoy it, great. If they brick their iOS device, that's a risk you take. Why does it bother everyone so much?

Joined the club, gotta say there are some cool features. But if someone is bored with iOS, 6 isn't gonna draw them back in.

Hi,

I'm a developer and have a friend who isn't. He downloaded iOS 6 from one of those websites where you pay $10 and give them your UDID, I keep telling him it's illegal and he won't believe me. Do you agree with me? No NDA, not from his own Dev account.......

Thanks!

If it's your friend why wouldn't you just add his uuid to your account instead of letting him waste $10 bucks

Tell your friend he's an idiot for paying $10 for something that you can have for free. You don't need to register your devices UDID with Apple anymore to run the betas. He could have just downloaded the IOS beta somewhere and installed it right away.

nice way to brick your phone until official release (if you cannot downgrade like many users are finding) ... of course you need to register your UDID with Apple for access to your beta's if you dont your device will not "activate" unless you use the hax0r3d way to install without registering

----------

I feel like you just made this response up because everyone is siding "against" you as you didn't mention anything about this in your OP. Lol.

In any event, as others have stated, it's not illegal just against the paid developers ToA. Your friend has nothing to worry about except the slight possibility of having his UDID removed from the registration list which would disable him from being able to update to future betas.

and temporarily bricking his phone (at least until the GM is released to the public) after the current beta expires...

----------

Yes. It's all over Youtube.

its on youtube it must be true LMAO....

there is a hacked way to install the beta without registering your UDID but its not as simple as just installing it like a normal update through iTunes....

smoking pot in Canada will just get you a dirty look by the cops, selling it will get your a fine and your stash confiscated, growing it will land you in Jail.

this is reportedly only working without the dev for some not all people

Installing Beta using Itunes

I just installed IOS 6 beta 4 on my iphone and second gen ipad without any problem. I used the method that they show on youtube. Works fine! Hardest part was finding and downloading the right beta file.

What

I honestly can't believe the amount of rubbish being spouted here by people who think they are developers but clearly aren't.

It is extremely unlikely illegal to install a beta, just pointless if you're not actually developing the the new iOS.

It IS entirely possible to install a beta now with about three clicks in iTunes without having your UDID registered. I personally believe Apple have done this on purpose to render the UDID 'black market' pointless.

It IS entirely possible to downgrade from any beta by restoring via iTunes, failing that DFU mode will work unless there is some kind of hardware problem as the actual OS isn't even loaded.

Thank you. Certain people here desperately wish these barriers were in place, but they're not.

I installed iOS6 on multiple devices this year without registering any of them in the portal. I forgot all about the "requirement" to register since it's been so long since I added a device.

I also downgraded almost all of the same devices to iOS5.

No, you do NOT need to register your UDID with Apple. I have an iPhone which has never been registered with my developer account and I've been able to install and run all the iOS betas so far without any problems. As the betas always expire way after a new beta (or final build) is being released, it's also very unlikely that your beta device will ever expire.

No, it IS as simple as that. Get a beta ISPW 'somewhere', connect your iPhone, Option-click 'update' in iTunes, select the beta ISPW, and that's it. This DEFINITLY works. No hacks required.

Absolutely! I NEVER understood why people are always saying that you can't downgrade from a beta. For me, this has ALWAYS worked with any beta released I installed so far. Make a backup in iTunes, keep it, and when you have problems with the beta, restore from this backup. Has ALWAYS worked for me!

The real mystery here is why your average Joe would even want iOS 6 beta. It's not like it's a barn-stormer or anything. I've had all the previous betas because there was new things in there to play around with, but this time around I've heard nothing of real interest.

Some people are appreciative of the finer details and don't need drastic changes year in and year out to be happy.

That said, your "Average Joe" probably doesn't even know that iOS 6 exists. If you're posting in this thread, you're not an "Average Joe".

The new Apple Maps is really cool, although since the search algorithm is far inferior to Google Maps, and it takes away Google Transit built-in and Street-View, as of right now it's mostly a downgrade, so I'm inclined to agree.

Yeah, you don't update. You Shift / option + restore. What's so hard about that?

Obviously you dont update the normal way. Sorry wasnt aware Apple took the restrictions away i had a Dev account for iOS4 and 5 Beta and you absolutely needed your UDID registered to run the beta (it would not activate after loading otherwise) so would have made sense to require it for iOS 6 Beta *egg on face*

Really. I have no problem with searches. And the loss of transit and street view is minor in comparison to the addition of turn by turn. That alone makes it a huge upgrade.

That's why I never want to test beta software, can't be having downtime with unstable software and also you can't submit app with xcode beta. I always wait until gm to test my app, not at beta. Just let other developers that have time to test the beta :D

Maybe you can tell your friend that even your fellow developer (me ) won't touch beta software.

I better watch out. I have never not declared a tip (never got any), I have never smoked pot, I don't stream TV illegally (Netflix is legal), but I do speed on occasion although I try not to (much). Yikes.....
