iOS 6 phone screen is always on

The phone screen is meant to dim down and turn off to conserve battery power. But after upgrading to iOS 6, the screen is always on even after launching a few apps and then closing them (in the background). Is anyone facing this or am I the only one?

FYI, I did a fresh install and then putting apps back onto the phone again; twice in fact just to ensure I am not mucking up the update process.

just dug through apple support forums, auto-lock will fail to function if one uses assistive touch like me on my 4S.

Mine started doing it too, but so far it's only happened while it's in the cradle.
