Shucks now I feel like it's just my phone lol. I've restored and started my phone as new but it still seems to be draining a bit. I'm going to give it a few days and just hope it goes away. My max usage with no music was around 7 hours before 7.1. But on average 5-6 hours. So if I can make 5 hours I'll be happy.

I haven't given it a full charge and full day test yet, so I'll be doing that tomorrow. Thanks for the feedback

Well this was on wifi only too. And my brightness was pretty low. This is great battery life stats from my 4S. It was terrible at first but I restored it as new and its been fine since

In my case, the thing is...

Since iOS 6 up to 7.0.6, every once in a while, the battery drains real fast like 1% every minute or so and the phone is really hot. I never found what is the problem but a reboot or closing apps do not fix it. The only thing that fixes it for some time is to reset the phone. IOS 7.0.6 was very problematic on that. So far with 7.1, I haven't notice the issue but then again, it's been out for only a couple of days. After a week or so, I'll be more able to conclude if this issue is fixed or not.

Not a full charge yet? OK do this. settings>general>reset>reset all settings. When it reboots if asked select new. (it doesnt wipe apps or data so dont worry). Once it comes back up go through your settings and set back up like you want. (diagnostics off, all sys services off and background refresh off for apps you dont need really updating constantly) Then let it drain until it shuts off. Plug in and let charge, undisturbed for maybe 1hr past when it hits 100%. Then see how it works going forward.

I'd never really thought about doing the reset straight from the phone, but I've done a restore (completely reflashes the software - which also resets all settings obviously) and had the same drain (but that was after I restored settings). Anyway, I've set my phone as new and will test it tomorrow.

I'm definitely not draining the battery and charging it an hour after 100%. Charging your phone after 100% hurts the battery a lot. Also draining doesn't fix things anymore :D but I appreciate the help. I'll know tomorrow if things are all good. It seems better since setting the phone up as new already, but it's only been an hour.

There's circuitry in place that won't charge the phone beyond 100% and won't cause any damage.

You can charge the phone all you want it will not hurt it. In fact Li-ion batteries prefer to be charged/topped often. Also what you are missing is the fact that you restored the backup After the restore. So what I am suggesting is the reset of settings AFTER you restored your backup from the older version of iOS. Perhaps if you are not fully charging the phone that is part of your issue as well. The meter shows 100% a while before its totally fully charged. It goes to a trickle after the meter hits 100 for another 45 to 60 minutes. That alone will yield more battery life but the process I have outlined will re-calibrate the software to the battery. I know for a fact it has helped numerous users over the years. Of course you are free to do what you want but the process I have outlined is a known solution to these types of issues dating back to at least iOS 5. Way I see it you have nothing to loose and everything to gain. That's my advice, do with it what you will. Best of luck to you!

Hmm, I'll trust you guys on this :)

I just heard that some of those methods were old Li-ion techniques that don't effect the current batteries used.

I will try resetting the settings tomorrow once I make sure I have all my settings documented and I'll also try to do the depletion tomorrow as well. I'll come back to inform you if I notice an immediate difference (as I did when updating to 7.1).

Oh god. We get this thread after every iOS release.

:D

I can't vote on this poll. It's better but not noticeable better.

If it's not noticeably better, then how'd you notice it? ;)

:(:(:( I hate this crap. I loved my battery life on 7.0.4-7.0.6, I just want it to be that good...

My last resort (after my actual last resort) is to just assume it'll take 5 days for the system files to settle down and stuff and then it'll magically stop draining......eff.

The way I see it, after a fresh restore, iOS has nothing else to settle down with, after all it's literally a blank install. I just downloaded apps and brought their data back with iFunbox. May have to go to the apple store soon.

Yeah after restoring my phone 3 times yesterday (set up as new phone) the battery is actually worse. From lackluster drain throughout the day to 9% drain overnight while not being used. I'm gonna try to re-sync by resetting settings and then drain and fully charge. I'll let you know my success with that today. I'm sure I'll have it done by 8pm Eastern.

No calls, a couple of texts and the rest has been solid WiFi browsing sat next to the router. This is woeful, I'm getting approx 50% of the quoted battery performance for my iPhone 5.

Final stats, purely web browsing over WiFi:

----------

This is worse battery life than a 3 year old, heavily used iPhone 4 on the original battery!
iOS7 is just not working properly on some iPhone 5 handsets and it's outrageous that the company allows this. I am having to recharge my battery near enough twice as often as I should which, apart from the inconvenience, will halve the lifespan of the battery itself. I'm only 7 months into a 24 month contract, so how the heck is this battery going to perform in over a year's time???

you see your reception...? 1-2 bars, thats whats killing your battery; the weak signal...

It didn't seem to affect battery life on iOS6.
I lived & worked in the same places and still managed 9 hours usage time per charge cycle. I have always had one or two bars of reception.
Whilst I accept that this would cause a quicker battery depletion on a call, why would it make such a huge difference if web browsing over WiFi?
Regardless, I had the same signal strength issues whilst on iOS6 and had fantastic battery life.

One of my bugbears with the iPhone 5 is the lousy signal strength compared to previous phones, the iPhone 4 included. I live in a supposedly strong signal area and yet only have one or two bars/dots at all times.

I think you need to give it more time, or see if there's something different in your usage scenarios. If you were in an area with poorer reception, you'll lose battery more quickly because it has to increase the power to the antennas.

I've not had enough time to judge whether the battery life is worse or better.

It will even out...Chill people.

Na that's not it. I get 4-5 bars at school, and 1-2 bars at home (even though I live in a well covered area my house gets terrible service), and although battery life is slightly worse at home, it's no more than 5% worse (7% worse max). If your phone is draining it's not because of that. Even walking around in an area of no service for several hours (outlet) my phone only lost 3% battery the other day.

same here
and with usage its even worse

I am at 2 hours of usage and 3 hours of stand by and its already at 40% left

I feel you. You may have the same problem as me. I'm finishing up with my full drain and full charge, so I'll let you know if that fixes the problem for me. So far, restoring hasn't helped

I updated to 7.1 via a fresh restore and that didn't work for me. I did not restore from a backup. My battery is just worse now...

So after doing a full drain and full recharge (charging for 50 minutes longer after 100%) my battery seems to be much better....might be slightlyyy worse then 7.0.6 but it's pretty much normal. Browsed Zedge for 25 minutes with only 1% battery loss (I made sure to bring it down to 88% before testing). Before it was like 3-4% battery loss. Thanks so much for the help.

I guess it's just safe to recalibrate your battery after every new update you install...

For the record I did 5 restores, 2 of which were set up as new phone (1 of which I didn't even change any settings, or install any apps; after the new setup) - and none of them solved my problem.

Location services is likely to blame

Assuming that Apple did not change how the battery gauge measures the power remaining with iOS 7.1, I've seen the most noticeable increase in battery drain when the phone goes into standby mode. A big part of this might come from Apple's decision to keep Location Services running in the background. Previously, location services would stop running on any apps not in active use.

I have not noticed any big difference in battery drain while using the phone, but the standby losses are noticeably greater than before.

I can't comment on that because the only two apps I have using "Location Services" are Camera and Weather. Camera for getting location, and weather for the stupid notification shade. Either way neither of those two are, or have been causing me drain.

However under background refresh I have a bunch more (Google maps, Facebook, etc), some of which also use GPS.

My battery seems to have normalized but it's still pretty bad. No way I can get over 6.5 hours of light/moderate use.

I am noticing a lot of "phantom usage" with iOS7.1

Easy to test it - go take a screenshot of usage stats, and put phone into standby... then look again in 30 minutes or an hour...

My iPhone added 6 minutes of "usage" in 30 minutes... so assuming that, 12 minutes per hour of phantom usage = around 2 hours of phantom usage in a day (assuming 12 hours).

Seems absurd to me...

It effectively means Apple are lying to us about "usage" figures, because there is just so much phantom usage it's not even funny... this is why you cannot compare iOS to Android - since Android actually gives a 100% honest figure of "screen on time", aka true usage of when you are actually using the device properly.
