This option is grayed out for me on my iPhone 5. Has anyone had a chance to try this? How does it function?

it's switched on on mine, says "ambient noise cancellation reduces noise on phone calls in loud environments". Pretty sure this is not a new feature, only that it can now be turned on and off

Turns out it was grayed out because I had hearing aid mode enabled.

What would be the benefit of turning this off?

Turning it off would disable the second microphone on your iPhone for noise cancellation meaning people on the other end of the phone will be able to hear background noise which can be pretty bothersome.

I understand what it does, I want to know why this needs to be disabled ever?
