The Passbook icon is actually quite lovely.
The Messages and Phone app are basically the same, but are probably a bit too bright now.
Notes and Reminders look nice, but aren't anything special.
Maps is ok, but sucks in comparison to the old icon.

Unfortunately, thats where the compliments end. All the other icons are just plain terrible. The gradients on the Videos, Weather, Music, Mail, iTunes Store and App Store is gaudy amateur stuff. Safari is a mess, Game Center doesn't even make sense, and the Photos App screams NBC. I appreciate what they tried to do with the Calendar, but it just looks incomplete like all the other white icons. The Settings doesn't even look like a cog!

Why couldn't they have kept the original icons without the gloss layer?

The icons look very bad. They should have went with something like this instead:

As it is now, the icons look too different from each other compared to the previous version of iOS. Same goes for the rest of the interface. There's no unity in the design. Every app and setting looks too different from the rest.

I'm still hoping that it's some joke that Apple has pulled in order to conceal the actual GUI that they're working on, but knowing them, this might be close to final version.

What was shown today at WWDC looked like a major step back for iOS.

A couple of days ago, someone posted the new icons (or what looked a lot like them) on here, and I was shocked to see they were correct. The safari icon looks very amateur. A lot of the mock-ups I've been seeing (like the one you posted) look a lot more impressive.

I think this is Apple now beginning to chase the competition rather than setting their own path.

First I'd like to say that I really love my iPhone 4S and just really enjoy using it. Every single day. I've been using Macs for years as well and love the incremental changes to OS X and what it looks and feels like.

I know that all this is very personal, but I just cannot, in any way shape or form, even remotely like these new icons.

Just look at it...

All the bright colors are colors I genuinely despise and would never ever pick for anything. The purple and pink, the blue and green, the red and orange. I'm sure they're all based on the same grid, but this doesn't really come across. It's just a mixture of the most bizarre color and icon choices I've seen in a long time. If I knew nothing about Apple and would pass this product in a store, I wouldn't even give it a single second of attention.

I would really like to love this new look, because I think many of the new design decisions are really good, but I feel like using this every day is like living in a nightmare. I've always had some comments about Apple's design choices here and there, but overall it was always in line with what I really liked and could appreciate. I'm pretty sure though that even in a few months this will still feel like a silly joke, and I can't imagine upgrading or spending money on a newer iPhone to be stuck with this.

But enough of that, here are a few specific thoughts.

Icons I just can't understand:

- Camera: why isn't it even centred vertically? I count 12 pixels on top, 15 on the bottom. The f.

- The signal bars are now dots and take up a lot of space. Why is this so important and prominent? What's the use? They even removed any way of distinguishing buttons from anything else, but for some reason in every single screen we need to look at a bunch of relatively big dots.

- Newsstand icon seems like it's cut off and randomly placed into an icon container without any further thought

- Like others mentioned, Safari seems completely out of place with the white background. Why don't they do the same with e.g. Settings?

Icons that look ok, within this horrible context:

- Photos: simple yet not under-designed. Compare Photos with Weather. What do you make of that? Both are made up of very simple overlaid shapes, yet the Weather app looks extremely childish, whereas the Photos app looks "designed".

- Maps: fine icon; clear and simple.

- Clock: as good as it can be.

- Stocks: I don't find it appealing in any way, but it does look fitting.

- Passbook: same as with Photos, it's simple but looks "designed" and not childish. The colors are less extreme which is good.

Oh man.. I loved the Keynote up until this point. Good content, great new things, funny jokes, confident speakers. And then they present this, and suddenly I had no clue anymore why I would ever spend money on an iOS device again if I'd be stuck with this.

Absolutely agree with you guys, I'm echoing the same words.

I hope this is some sick prank..but it seems like i'll have to wait for an iOS 7 jailbreak for me to enjoy using the device. This is sad.

I can design a better home screen in an hour, I expected more from Apple Designers, what happened?

My few cents

The messages one is okay except for the bubble being slightly oversized.

I feel like there should be a line or a divider between the day and the date of the month, and while it looks nice on a colored background, what if there was a white background?

Photos look ok but totally out of scheme with Camera.

Weather looks ok but yea, a little bit too "childish".

I don't see how Game Center is related to gaming.

Clock, phone, music, mail, stocks and videos are fine.

Safari, iTunes, app store's circle boundary is way too large. The effect is esp. prominent in Safari, which would have looked better if it was just a compass.

Settings and compass are fine, don't like how dark compass is though.

Newsstand and passbook are too cluttered.

Reminders and notes are so childish and lack professionality!

My thoughts exactly. I like darker colors and muted shades. I am not a fan of bright pink, purple, red, orange, and green hues. The icon colors give IOS7 a very feminine look, which I do not like. I would not be caught dead wearing these shades to work, and I do not want them on my phone.

We have all seen members of the female sex with bright pink and purple covers on their iPhones. Apple has applied the same ridiculous "look at me" colors to their icons and I do not like it at all. That said, my SO -- who likes to wear these colors in the summer -- loves it.

I was spoiled by looking at some of the truly fantastic iOS7 mocks.

Look at how mature and balanced that design is. I just don't have it in me to justify the tie-dye garbage of the current iOS7 design.
I agree. I much prefer those muted colors to the icon colors in IOS7.

They have got to be temporary. Everyone, please send feedback!

As bad as they are, I expect this is them. I don't see Apple making a big deal of the NEW flat UI, presenting it to 6000 live and many more online, and then changing it substantially later.

The Game Center icon is the worst. What were they thinking?!

i guess i have to stay with ios 6 just because i cant stand the new design.... thats sad :( hopefully there will be a ios 7 jailbreak and a theme that gives me the nice icons back.

i also think that the app store is very ugly.

I really like the new apps and cleaness of the new UI.

The whole OS is a breath of fresh air, I love it! can't wait to get hold of it, much needed overhaul.

I do think that the colours used on the icons might take a bit of getting used to, only in the fact that the colours are a little bright for my personal taste.

I think the OS is the perfect balance of new functionality without becoming over complicated for the masses.

You have to remember that Apples biggest market for iPhone, buy it for its simplicity, and dont like things changed at volume, or they'll be lost and confused.

Very happy, well done Apple!

As a whole, I like them. There are some that I'm not really enamored with. I see what they were trying to do, and I think its a step (make that a leap) in the right direction. With iOS7 apple was swinging for the fences, and with the icons there's some hits and some misses imo

I don't have much comment on most of the icons except two. Besides the confusing Game Center icon which really has nothing to do with "Game Center" or even "games", the camera icon is really much much inferior to the old one. It is an icon that uses the outline of a very old camera to represent the camera (!!!)...it looks like the very thing that they aimed to get rid of (deforstallization) in the first place! The old camera lens icon is so beautiful and easy to understand.

you think that the devs will be forced to make their icons look "flat" too? god i hope not...
