When the iPad came out, everyone said it was "just a big iPhone/ipod touch" ... the problem with iOS 7 not being optimised for iPad, it actually DOES make it feel just like a big iPhone/ipod touch!

Ive has a fixation with "simple".

Sometimes that works, other times, he's living in a romanticized poetic fantasy world where people all use the device casually on their chaise lounge, in a very linear and narrow way.

Surely, after years of having 4x4, 4x5 grid pages... People are capable of handling more than 3x3 folders.

bump. AWFUL. It negates almost all of the upshots of ios 7.
I've been asking devs I know to feedback about this since the first beta was released. Frustrating that it was completely ignored.

Have no idea what the crazy thinking was on this. How do we lobby Jony? :)

Not excusing the decision to waste space, but the reason for it is obvious to me. It is to maintain visual consistency when you "zoom in" on the folder by tapping on it.

At least, and it's a small consolation, when going from portrait to landscape on the ipad the folder contents stay in the same presentation.
3x3 always instead of 4x5 portrait and 5x4 landscape. The app is always where I left it.

Like I said, a small consolation.

Agreed. Simplicity is fine, but I think certain kinds of complexity are okay so long as they are also intuitive. The new OS on iPad is too simple (a better problem to have). The opposite of the spectrum is Windows 8, which is too complicated (how am I supposed to know the swipe pattern for disabling wi-fi and such) which is not intuitive at all.

Please provide feedback to Apple on this issue.

Impressed with iOS 7, EXCEPT for the new Folders. Absolutely hate that you can only see 9 app icons at a time, down from 16 in iOS 6. Scrollable Folders are nice, but not at the cost of the number of apps viewable at once.

Everyone, please provide feedback to Apple on this issue. Do mention you think this change hurt the ergonomics of the iPad.

It's also pretty bad on the iPhone and iPod touch to have 2 pages of apps in a folder instead of the one you had on iOS 6.

Remember the more people who provide feedback to Apple on an issue, the more likely they will look at it and maybe do something.

I agree, this is a really bad waste of space. I think the idea was more design based than user experience in this case. It makes it so when its an icon its the same as when it zooms in...but that is so unnecessary. It could have been the same as before.

This is the feedback I provided to Apple:
On iOS 6, you were allowed 20 apps in a folder on an iPad.

On iOS 7, it puts 9 apps per page within a folder. The means that folders that has between 10 and 20 apps will now have 2 or 3 pages of apps, this hurts the workflow and ergonomics of iOS 7. Please increase the number of apps per folder page to what it was in iOS 6.

The reason I used a lot of folders is to have everything on one page so I didn't have to swipe back and forth several pages of apps to get to the app I was looking for. Now I have a several folders that are 2 or 3 pages instead of one and I have to remember what page of the folder an app is on. This hurts workflow, ease of use and ergonomics.

Yes I know I repeated the workflow and ergonomics comment, but I felt it was important they see that.

I guess I'm the minority but I like the 9x9 grid and the fact that space is allowed (the apps don't move and fill the empty space when an app is deleted). It's enabled me to organize my apps better. The first page is for apps that I use often and the rest are for apps I'll rarely use. I also like that I can see, without opening the folder, which apps are inside (in the first page, that is).

It's dumb that I can't see all the apps at once. How was this supposed to be better?

I really didn't like it at first, but it's starting to grow on me, it just looks more organized and concise because of the even symmetry of 3 x 3. I remember in certain marketing and psychology classes they said that 3 is the perfect number to display choices by to someone. Any more and the individual becomes distracted or unfocused.

I guess it's somewhat true because now when I open a folder that split or half second used to focus and find what you're looking for is gone for me. The process has become less mental and more intuitive if that makes any sense. The layout simply makes it quicker for my eye to spot what I'm looking for .

There's still other things that I have problems with in iOS though like the animations, the calendar and clock app and a few more things but mostly the animations, I need the much more practical snappiness of IOS 6 back.

Just to add, that was the link for iPad feedback - could you please feedback on iPhone too? Feedback here
There are loads of folders where I regularly use more than 9 apps - so it's extra swipes for no reason at all.

All this 3x3 'aesthetics' and 'doesn't distract you' business is total tosh. When you use a device this regularly, the familiarity with what's on your phone makes those 'perfect' numbers totally irrelevant. Those kind of studies are done to get the best response from people when marketing to them generally, or seeking one-off feedback/responses (I know, because I used to do that research). Totally the wrong application of those arguments.

Please feedback to Apple guys - here for iPhone here for iPad (but you know what I really mean... BOTH! =o)

Might as well add the feedback link for the iPod touch, after all it has the same folder issues with iOS 7.

I couldn't agree more. If I wanted to scroll through pages of crap I would not use folders at all.

I hate that. If I delete an app, I want all other apps to move up, not leave an empty space. If I have 10 apps after the one I deleted, they need to be moved over one by one.

Did this happen in the past? I don't ever recall apps automatically moving up a page (from 3 to 2, 2 to 1). They certainly went the other way though.

EDIT: It just dawned on me you are referring to apps in folders not moving up. I agree on that point. They should move up!

This is the most personally infuriating design decision I've ever seen in an apple OS. IMO a true failure of style over function.

The one feature I was MOST looking forward to in iOS7 was unlimited apps in a folder. This absolutely arbitrary restriction is just enormously painful, and kills the joy of this long awaited feature. On an iPad they've cut the number to LESS THAN HALF

I'm otherwise enjoying iOS7 and even like the look, but I truly HATE this restriction. Angry, angry angry.

BTW for those who say you like it, you certainly would be able to set it up that way if apple did not have such a restriction.

We've been talking about this since beta 1. I don't know why Apple went with a 3X3 Grid when the home page layout is a 4X5.

4x6 if you include the app bar at the bottom (which you might also notice is not there when you go into a folder)

Absolutely. I was ALWAYS annoyed by the previous restriction. IMO this new one is just arbitrary and capricious.
