This is the type of mentality that kills previously successful companies and RIM is the best example. They dominated the smartphone industry until the iPhone came out. They didn't feel like they needed to change either. Now they are changing radically with BB10 just to survive.

Android *is* gaining market share partially because of the OS. Some people with iPhones are bored and see innovations in Android and other platforms that they'd like to have. People buy what they want and are not particularly loyal.

I think that's a fair argument. That said, Blackberry OS was laughable compared to the iPhone's. While there are things that Android is doing that I would like Apple to implement, I don't think that Android and iOS are far apart. iOS still has some pretty nice advantages over Android as well. Something thar RIM could not say about BB OS.

This might be true, but what does Apple spend their time on? Facebook integration? Passbook? Each year, I keep wondering what the whole OS team did with their time over the last year.

Well there was that podcast app...

Wishlist:

* Hubs (Windows Phone actually has an innovative feature that iPhone doesn't): Apple should make an API for devs to link photos into Apple's Photos app. So, my Dropbox Photos folder, my Facebook Pics and my Flickr picks can all be viewed just by going into the stock Photos app. Same thing with videos etc.

* iDisk: Anyone I know who does work on their iPad, uses Dropbox. I know Apple wants to get away from a "file system" but what's the difference between OS X's files/folders and iOS's folders (ex. look at saving/opening files in iWork on iOS)? None. Apple should just make smart folders in iDisk. Ex. if I upload a picture, it goes into a "Photos" folder that holds all PNGs, JPEGs etc. Same thing with a "Documents" folder (it would hold PDFs, Doc, iWork docs). It seems ridiculous that one can't save a Word file from an email on iOS without some third-party app. Imagine that you can't save files onto your Mac/PC unless you have to download an app first.

A related feature I miss from my HTC devices is their integration in the contacts app. On your contacts you have several tabs e g for messages where you can see your complete message history with that person (one for texts and one for e-mails), one with your call history, one with their Facebook updates ,one for pictures where you could see all their published pictures from different social medias like Facebook, picasa and instagram (if memory serves me correct, FB for sure). Sure, it's no dealbreaker, but it was a nice feature I think and and a good way of getting a quick update about a person.

I agree with many here in feeling that Apple has really been doing nothing but "minor" additions and upgrades more like a .x version than a full release point. I'm happy with the upgrades so far, but think Apple need to pull something out of the bag in terms of what iOS7 has.

While I love the ease of use, simplicity and look of iOS, I'm also a person who modifies their car, upgrades every 3 years to get new features, more power and the ability to select my car based on my personality. I want to do the same with my iPhone. Hardware is one thing, but I also want more ability to customise the look of the iOS - basically themes, skins etc, but go even further than that with location, time and fast selection of themes which affect the look of the iOS as well as things like ring and vibration, screen brightness etc.

I want one app to play all my audio - audio books, podcasts, music, another to do my video's, and one book application that allows me to view my book, magazine, newspaper subscriptions etc. I dont need news stand and a books app - they can be combined, same as podcasts and music - it's duplicating the function rather than streamlining the way I use the iPhone.

Oh and if I dont use an installed application such as books, Music, stocks or weather on a device then let me not have to have the icon there (I dont case if it's installed, just let me "hide" some applications - I have NEVER used the weather and stocks apps, and never will in the future)

A centralised file location would be great - copy word, excel, txt, pdf, gedcom, or even graphic etc files to a central location via a drag and drop interface from a PC that does not even need iTunes please, and then have the iPhone be able to open the files with any compatible program. The current way to put files onto the Phone is way too clunky

iCloud and PC backup at the same time please, with some smarts to allow sharing of partial things like common contacts in a family, but still be able to have your own "private" contacts that are not shared. Go one more - have the ability for me to add a contact and choose "shared or local" and change that at any time, and if we are using iCloud as well as the PC, have the contact automatically shared to the other shared devices automatically.

Ios 7

Do you think iOS 7 is the OS which will feature an all new design to compete with Androids new design in key lime pie?

An Apple menu.

Yes, an Apple freaking menu.

An one stop shop for your iOS device. You could switch users, update software, pin some Apps so that you don't have to look for them on the home screen and control some settings.

If Apple wants the Notification Center to look clean, they could simply make an Apple menu. They could also incorporate added functions for the Apple menu for each app.

EDIT: I will add some mockups on what I'm talking about.

EDIT2: Added mockups. I know they are very flawed but you get the idea.

As much as I want iOS 7 to be HUUUGEEE I keep thinking it won't be.

My reasons:
Ive only took over recently (last few months) so the ~9 months he has been in charge by the time it might be shown/released seems a bit less to change up anything too much.

Instead I think it will be what iOS 5 was to iOS 4... they seem to be on a tic-toc cycle with both Phones and OS's (iPhone 4S > 5/iOS 5 > iOS 6) so iOS 7 should be bigger than 6 was.

I also believe the rumors that Apple are working on a large (~4.7") phone for 2014 release (NOT 2013 as some say) and I think that in 2014 Ive will have had a lot of time to change up the OS at it's absolutely core for the introduction of this new super screen.

It just seems to make sense, I just hope it isn't too late for most people!

Also with the super sized phone would mean the iPhone 5 could go free, 5S costing $100, and super size costing $200. Thus the 3.5" is eradicated and they will still only have 2 screen sizes!

So just a notification center with added features? I like the idea, but I don't see a use for a whole different menu for it.

I'll divide this post up by fixes and new features.

{{Fixes}}

• Safari- Tired of the crashing, dead tabs and freezing.

• Maps. They suck.

• Siri. She sucks.

{{Requested Features}}

• Notification Center
• in the lock screen
• ability to dismiss individual notifications
• Quick settings widget
• Allow developers to create widgets
• Actionable notifications- I.e. respond to texts, etc
• Better looking. New theme or something. Idk. It's ugly in my opinion.

• Passbook

• Support for NFC hardware (assuming we ever get an iPhone with NFC. Doubtful).

• Better Multitasking. Not sure how, just needs to be gesture controlled and better looking.

• Sharing options like android.

• Inter app communications. This ties into my last point in that on android apps are aware of each other and allow the user to send data or share data with apps.

• Allow users to set default apps.

• Allow users to delete stock apps, and download them from the App Store if they need them.

• Ship iPhones only with the following apps:

• Phone

• Messages

• iTunes

• App Store

• Gestures on the iPhone

• Automatic app updates

• Self destructing iMessages

• App.Net integration (obvious pipe dream)

• Guest Mode/User Logins for iOS devices

• Allow developers more (greater) access to system resources.

So just a notification center with added features? I like the idea, but I don't see a use for a whole different menu for it.

If they want to make the NC to be clean. They could do that. Or do the Android method. 2 swipes down.

iPhone 4S>iPhone5??? Can I have some of that stuff your smoking lol.

Apple is proving (at least so far) that they don't have the ability to make the OS do more. That's why all the 'keep it simple' and 'It Just Works' mantras.

There's no reason they couldn't do themes, file system access and all that. Have it off by default and all the hand-wringers have nothing to worry about, but the rest of us can turn the stuff on and actually get more out of the device.

iOS7 will definitely tell the tale. If all we get is a ridiculous new dock it will be a sad day for iOS innovation indeed.

Kill the lock screen. That's useless. And make homescreen with large clock and live weather app and launch pad.

I agree 100%. The lock screen needs some major improvements! Widgets, maybe a new unlock style similar to face unlock on iCS?

I would also really LOVE to have something similar to iFile. A file explorer of some sort, downloading through safari, more customization! (Of course I highly doubt that'll actually happen though #)

A realistic iOS (7) wish list - feel free to contribute!

Ignore all the asterisks (*) in the text, for some reason they just showed up, I now freaking idea why, ghosts maybe...

I figured we should see what we users desiree most of iOS, so I compiled a wish list with mostly major features that are sensible enough to become real. The list isn't made specifically for iOS 7, but for all future iOS versions.
Feel free to add your own suggestions in the comment section, or pick out the five features you would like most in iOS.
In no particular order:
1.*iPad-like gesture app switching.
Swiping between apps is the fastest way to multitask, a first-pixel swipe would be required. Swiping up from the bottom would show the app switcher.

2. Gestures in Safari.

When fully zoomed out in a webpage, a spread (reverse pinch) should bring you into the tab view. Just like it works in Safari on OS X. When fully scrolled to either the left or right side of the page, a horizontal swipe back or forth should take you to the page behind or ahead of you. Obviously this gesture would work anywhere on the screen to avoid conflict with the app switching gesture.

3. "Official" side menu.

Apple should adopt the "side menu" as featured in countless iOS apps, for example Facebook. Apple should create an API for developers to use, so users won't have to deal with different "side menu" behavior in different apps.

4. Scrollable Folders.

This is really a no-brainer. It's not that elegant to have multiple folders titled "Games 1, 2, 3" etc. The folders would scroll vertically and have "snap-points" just like the home screen to make sure you never se half an app icon. However if a user puts a huge amount of apps in a folder, say above 36 apps, the folder would scroll freely without snap-points (like Safari) to save time and hassle.*

5. Ability to hide stock apps.

How often do you need a compass or check out the stock market? How often do you read magazines on your iPhone? Instead of squeezing in all unused apps in some remote folder, how about actually being able to hide them completely.
Notice I say "hide" the app wouldn't be deleted, it would just not be shown on the home screen.

Apple could do this two ways: Showing a little black minus sign on the default apps when you enter jiggly mode, tapping this would take the app away from the home screen.

In the Settings app have a On/Off toggle "Show app on Home Screen" in every stock apps section.

These two methods would complement each other.

Bringing back a hidden app would be as simple as toggling the switch to "On". I imagine some less tech-savvy users might go into the App Store to try to bring back a hidden app. Thus, if you search for a hidden app in the App Store it should show up with a "Show on Home Screen" button. Tapping the button would have the exact same effect as toggling the switch in Settings. If you search for a stock app which is not hidden in the App Store, nothing would show up.

6.*Ability to choose default apps.

Apple's stock apps really doesn't hold a candle to some of the third-party apps, so why can't we choose what apps to use as default apps?

Choosing default apps would be done in Settings, apps wouldn't be allowed to pester you with notifications telling you "Blabla-app doesn't seem to be the default app, would you like to change this?".*

Apple would have to provide an API which developers would have to implement to enable their apps to be eligible as default apps.

7. Wallpaper slideshow.

The ability to change wallpapers automatically, just like on OS X.

8. "Quick Response" interface for SMS/chat apps.

A interface similar to the Facebook and Twitter, "Share-cards" in iOS. Tapping once on a notification banner would bring the quick response interface up, double-tapping would bring you to the app (this could be toggled On/Off in Settings).

An API would be made available for third-party apps to hook into the quick response interface, perhaps allowing developers to skin the UI as well.

9.*Photo Booth for iPhone.

10.*API for game*controls.

Apple should create an official API for controls for developers to use in their games. This would ensure any controller or keyboard you use with your iPhone/iPad will work with all games.

11.*Live Icons.

Obviously no crazy things that would make the home screen look chaotic, but small things. Perhaps letting the Clock app icon show the current time, the Weather app the current weather and so on.

12.*Keyboard and Mouse Support (Including app shortcuts).

The keyboard support iOS currently has could be expanded to include navigation, additional shortcuts and so on. Mouse and touchpad support would be a great feature too, just look at all the iPad keyboard cases without any touchpads out there.*

I don't want any idiots arguing against this, it's an ADDITIONAL method of input, if you don't want to use it, FINE, but don't ruin it for other users who might.

13.*Free icon layout on home screen.

The ability to put icons wherever you want on the home screen, instead of having them arrange automatically next to each other.

14.*Air Drop.

Being able to send files "just like that" between Macs and iOS devices, and iOS to iOS would be amazing.

15.*Facebook-style photo/video viewer.

Anyone who has used the Facebook app knows what I'm talking about, dismissing a photo is as simple as swiping it away, up or down. This is how it should be in the Photos app, and this is how it should be when watching videos in Safari for example.

16.*Browser file uploading.

In iOS 6 (I think) Apple made it possible to upload photos in Safari, they should extend this to cover all filetypes like text documents, spreadsheets etc.

17.*Themes.

Bare with me on this one... Official support for theming would make sure people have less of a reason to get tired of their devices. This would only apply to the home screen icons, nothing else would be themeable, but you would be able to give the device a fresh feel whenever you felt like!

18.*Search for contact conversation in Messages.

In the Messages app, the search function only searches the contents of your conversation. If I type in "Emma" for example, it won't bring up my conversation with Emma, can't believe they've missed this.

19.*Ability to record the screen.

Clicking the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time produces a screenshot. Holding it for a few seconds should start a countdown from 3, and then start recording the screen. To end the recording you would tap the buttons again.

20.*Ability to copy text within a text message, rather then having to copy the whole message.

Self explanatory.

21.*Combine Maps & Compass.

There's no need for a standalone Compass app.

22.*Ability to view message details for every single message.

23.*Move iPad Notification Center to right side of screen.

Just like in OS X, it simply looks a lot better, and makes more sense.

24. Improved DND.

I don't use DND myself, so I'm not that sure of the current feature set, but I know there's room for much development.

Geo-activated DND. DND could be automatically activated when you arrive at school, the movies and so on. This could also be combined with a time variable, for example, don't bother me when I'm at location X at times X:XX to X:XX.

Calendar-integration, DND would automatically turn on when you have a scheduled meeting.*

And so on...

Feel like I've missed something? Tell me in the comments and I'll update the list!

I'd like to add to that theme idea. I think there should be a way for users to create their own themes for all aspects of ios. Apple can release a theme creating app for Mac and windows that's easy for people to figure out and understand.

I'd also like a dock like android, with an all apps button

New lock screen. Since ios has been released there has been a grand total of 1 change to the lock screen. I had a concept where there were 5 apps at the bottom that you could choose, and swiping up will open that app. And at the end there was a ! Which meant notifications, and swiping that up showed all your missed notifications.

Prettier safari

Merging the phone, messaging, and contacts app into one app. (There was a concept video, ill post it if I can find it.)

That's all for now. I have a lot more, but they don't seem too practical.

Battery Saver feature like on WP7. I had Windows Phone 7 and I think it would be a nice feature for iPhone users

The reason why apple is rather unlikely to implement something like this is that they don't want their users need to worry about battery life. iOS and all iDevices are designed to handle battery efficiently and smartly themselves. For instance, WIFI turns itself off if not needed, apps running in the background generally consume very little power (because it's not "real" multitasking but actually smarter than that).
